However, Sims is unlikely to remain in the starting lineup once Staley returns. Singletary added that Sims is unlikely to move to right tackle, because he likes the job OT Adam Snyder is doing at the position.

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports free-agent OT Barry Sims (Raiders) has decided to sign a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers, according to his agent, Ken Vierra. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. "What maybe tips it a little bit is the money is a little bit better and you don't have to move to play here," Vierra said. "All I can tell you is he had a good feel in San Francisco." The team made no promises to Sims, other than he will be allowed to compete for playing time at right tackle against OT Jonas Jennings.

Vierra said he was hopeful the two sides could reach an agreement on a two- or three-year contract, but the Panthers only wanted to sign him for one year. Vierra said it was highly unlikely that talks with Carolina would resume before the 2008 NFL Draft.
