Boston Red Sox RP Andrew Bailey will make $3.9 million as he avoided salary arbitration. Others that avoided arbitration Friday, Jan. 18, are RP Daniel Bard ($1.8625 million), RP Andrew Miller ($1.475 million) and RP Franklin Morales ($1.4875 million).

Nine Boston Red Sox players filed salary arbitration this week, including RP's Alfredo Aceves, Andrew Bailey, Daniel Bard, Craig Breslow, and Joel Hanrahan, SP's Andrew Miller and Franklin Morales, OF Jacoby Ellsbury, and C Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Saltalamacchia settled his arbitration case on Thursday, Jan. 17. The others will exchange salary figures Friday, Jan. 18.

The Boston Red Sox are not trying to trade away SPs Josh Beckett or Jon Lester, according to general manager Ben Cherington. However, they are willing to deal C Kelly Shoppach, OF Ryan Sweeney and RPs Matt Albers and Andrew Miller. RPs Clayton Mortensen and Junichi Tazawa are also candidates to be traded.

Boston Red Sox SP Andrew Miller (hamstring) walked four while striking out three in just 1 1/3 innings with Triple-A Pawtucket Thursday, April 19. He threw just 20 of his 50 pitches for strikes. Miller has given up four runs and four hits with nine walks and 12 strikeouts in six minor league rehab games. Miller believes he's completely recovered from his strained left hamstring.
