Orioles | Jair Jurrjens to start Saturday

Fri, 17 May 2013 12:11:43 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SP Jair Jurrjens will be recalled to start Saturday, May 18.

Fantasy Tip: This move was expected after Wei-Yin Chen (oblique) landed on the disabled list earlier this week. Injuries compounded Jurrjens' problems the last several seasons. He's healthy now but should remain valuable only in deep AL leagues initially.

Orioles | Miguel Gonzalez hopes to throw this weekend

Tue, 14 May 2013 13:00:37 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SP Miguel Gonzalez (thumb) is hoping to pitch in a minor league rehab game later this week, but he has yet to throw a bullpen session.

Fantasy Tip: It doesn't sound good for Gonzalez returning to pitch for the Orioles this weekend, meaning it seems likely that both Steven Johnson and Jair Jurrjens will be asked to enter the team's starting rotation in the short term. Both Johnson and Jurrjens could be options for your AL-only pitching staff.

Orioles | Wei-Yin Chen to DL

Tue, 14 May 2013 11:27:32 -0700

The Baltimore Orioles placed SP Wei-Yin Chen (oblique) on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, May 14, and recalled RP Alex Burnett from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. Chen's DL stint is retroactive to May 13.

Fantasy Tip: It's unclear who the O's will choose to replace Chen in the rotation with between Jair Jurrjens and Steven Johnson. Both pitchers could be in the rotation if Miguel Gonzalez (thumb) needs more time to recover from a thumb blister, too. Stay tuned.

Orioles | Wei-Yin Chen expected to land on DL

Mon, 13 May 2013 12:40:41 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SP Wei-Yin Chen (oblique) is expected to land on the disabled list with a strained oblique. The team thinks Chen could take longer than two weeks to heal from his injury.

Fantasy Tip: Jair Jurrjens and Steven Johnson could both be added to the rotation depending on the health situation with Miguel Gonzalez (thumb). Stay tuned here. If both Jurrjens and Johnson come up, Jurrjens should be your first target if you're scrounging for pitching in deep AL leagues.

Orioles | Jair Jurrjens could join rotation

Mon, 13 May 2013 12:18:10 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SP Jair Jurrjens could be called up from Triple-A Norfolk to join the rotation with SPs Miguel Gonzalez (thumb) and Wei-Yin Chen (oblique) injured. Jurrjens allowed five runs and seven hits while walking none and striking out six in seven innings for Norfolk Monday, May 13. Manager Buck Showalter is deciding between SPs Freddy Garcia and Jason Hammel for Wednesday, May 15, against the San Diego Padres. Chen could start Saturday, May 18, but SP Steven Johnson could be recalled if Chen needs to go on the disabled list. Jurrjens could opt out of his contract June 15.

Fantasy Tip: 2012 was an atrocious season for Jurrjens, and his injuries didn't help him at all. Baltimore may decide to opt for Jurrjens over Johnson if they need an extra starter because of Jurrjen's opt out date approaching. Jurrjens hasn't impressed in the minors, though, so don't expect much from him if he's recalled. He'll strictly be AL-only rotation fodder if you're desperate.

Orioles | Kevin Gausman ready for call-up?

Wed, 01 May 2013 15:54:48 -0700

Baltimore Orioles SP Kevin Gausman has 29 strikeouts and just one walk while pitching 28 2/3 innings with Class AA this year. SP Freddy Garcia will start against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Saturday, May 4, but Gausman may be ready to come up to the majors before long. Garcia is 4-0 with a 2.67 ERA at Triple-A Norfolk and can opt out of his contract if he's not in the majors by May 15. SP Jair Jurrjens, who is 2-1 with a 2.64 ERA at Norfolk, could also be in front of Gausman. Jurrjens can opt out June 15. The Orioles may want to keep Gausman in the minors until June to prevent him reaching Super 2 status and gaining an extra year of arbitration. Gausman is 1-3 with a 3.77 ERA, but he's allowing more than a hit per inning.

Fantasy Tip: As Rosenthal discusses, don't expect the O's to recall Gausman anytime before June, after they've exhausted their other options to fill the No. 5 rotation spot. He'll likely need to move up to Class AAA before he makes the jump to the bigs, too. However, with Dylan Bundy (forearm) injured, Gausman's timetable for his major league debut was likely cut drastically. Keeper leaguers and owners in deep AL leagues should have your ears perked up.

Orioles | Jake Arrieta won't head to bullpen

Mon, 22 Apr 2013 14:37:42 -0700

The Baltimore Orioles don't plan to send SP Jake Arrieta to a bullpen role in the minors, and he'll start again for Triple-A Norfolk Friday, April 26. The team won't use a reliever for Arrieta's spot in the rotation Wednesday, April 24. SPs Zach Britton, Freddy Garcia and Josh Stinson are candidates to take the vacant rotation spot. Garcia is the only one not on the 40-man roster, and he has an opt-out clause in his contract. SP Jair Jurrjens started in the minors Sunday, April 21, so he's not an option.

Fantasy Tip: Britton, Garcia and Stinson should only be considered if you're desperate in AL-only leagues. Arrieta could be brought back up to get another shot in the starting rotation at some point, but he's not worth owning for the time being.
