Smith, who is two sacks away from the all-time NFL sack record, is not happy with the coaches' decision and plans to speak to them about it this week.

According to Mark Maske, of the Washington Post, the Washington Redskins are contemplating making several changes to the team's defense. Defensive coordinator George Edwards said the team is considering creating expanded pass-rushing roles for LB LaVar Arrington and DE Ladairis Jackson. The team also plans to give DE Regan Upshaw more time and possibly curtail DE Bruce Smith's time to keep him fresh. Edwards also said that they may spend more time in the 3-4 defensive alignment. "We've used it in the past," Edwards said. "We'll see. We're in the early stages right now of [preparing for] Buffalo, and we're going to run what we deem necessary to get them stopped."

Upshaw participated in the Wednesday, August 6 morning practice after missing three straight practices. "It aches, but it's nothing I can't handle," Upshaw said. "It's bothering me. I don't like it. But it doesn't worry me. It's going to get stronger. It's like a fly, a gnat. I knew my knee was not going to be completely healed for training camp."

Updating previous reports, the AP reports Washington Redskins DE Bruce Smith may still return to play in 2003. He had indicated in January he was leaning toward quitting. After meeting with coach Steve Spurrier and owner Dan Snyder, Smith is leaning the other way. "Dan and I had a good discussion, so I'm pretty optimistic," Smith said. "There's still some issues to work out." The coach said Smith is concerned about losing his starting job to DE Regan Upshaw. Smith said he'll decide soon whether to keep playing.

"We have tentative agreement on a five-year contract," Drew Rosenhaus, Upshaw's agent, said Saturday morning. Upshaw could move in as a starter ahead of DE Bruce Smith, who is no longer expected to be an every-down player if he decides not to retire.

The Ap, citing a CBS Sports story, reports Oakland Raiders DE Regan Upshaw was fined $87,000 by coach Bill Callahan for a confrontation with offensive line coach Aaron Kromer two weeks ago. Upshaw then filed a grievance against the Raiders on Thursday, as an appeal to the fine. Upshaw had no comment, but Callahan acknowledged that something had happened.

The Contra Costa Times reports Oakland Raiders DE Trace Armstrong can't wait to "hit somebody" as he continues his rehab from last year's Achilles' injury. Armstrong returned to the practice field for the first time since the injury this week, but the Raiders are still holding him out of contact drills. "I'm close to being 100 percent," Armstrong said. "But I'm not hitting anybody. I'm very pleased with the progress I'm making. I've had a few minor bumps along the road, but overall I'm on target as far as where I want to be." Despite the injury to DE Regan Upshaw, Armstrong's role as pass-rushing specialist isn't expected to change.

Upshaw said he will have surgery within a week to repair the ligament, and the rehabilitation likely will take up to a year.

The Associated Press report the Oakland Raiders received bad news on DE Regan Upshaw Saturday. He will miss the entire 2002 season after tearing a ligament in his right knee during the team's current mini-camp. An MRI exam of Upshaw's knee revealed the tear in his anterior cruciate ligament, coach Bill Callahan said Saturday. "It was a kick in the stomach for about 10 minutes," Upshaw said. "Then I looked at my situation, and it was like, 'OK, what can I do here? What are my options?' My only option is to rehab. I'm on a rehab mission now."

Darryl Ashmore replaced Kennedy last Sunday. OT Barry Sims (foot), G Mo Collins (leg) and CB Charles Woodson (toe) also did not practice. Collins is OUT for Sunday, coach Jon Gruden said. Gruden said he intends to use Woodson and WR Tim Brown again on punt returns.
