Vic Ketchman, of Jaguars.com, reports the Jacksonville Jaguars may be interested in signing free agent DL Regan Upshaw (Raiders), although a move is not anticipated in the near future. "We have looked at the list," head coach Jack Del Rio said. "We have squeezed everything we can out of that list. It's not the time of year. Defensive ends just don't fall out of the sky."

Mark Zuckerman, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins DE Phillip Daniels (abdomen) was sidelined during Saturday's practice, Aug. 7, with an abdominal strain and is not expected to play against the Denver Broncos Monday, Aug. 9. DE Regan Upshaw will replace Daniels at defensive end.

Mark Zuckerman, of the Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins DE Bruce Smith was informed before the start of the Week 9 game against the Dallas Cowboys that he would be replaced by DE Regan Upshaw as the starting right defensive end. Smith, who is two sacks away from the all-time NFL sack record, is not happy with the coaches' decision and plans to speak to them about it this week.

According to Mark Maske, of the Washington Post, the Washington Redskins are contemplating making several changes to the team's defense. Defensive coordinator George Edwards said the team is considering creating expanded pass-rushing roles for LB LaVar Arrington and DE Ladairis Jackson. The team also plans to give DE Regan Upshaw more time and possibly curtail DE Bruce Smith's time to keep him fresh. Edwards also said that they may spend more time in the 3-4 defensive alignment. "We've used it in the past," Edwards said. "We'll see. We're in the early stages right now of [preparing for] Buffalo, and we're going to run what we deem necessary to get them stopped."
