Indians | Asdrubal Cabrera struggling with approach

Thu, 17 Apr 2014 11:04:53 -0700

Cleveland Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera has always been a free swinger in his career, and he admits that the first pitch is often the best pitch to take advantage of with opposing pitchers trying to get ahead. However, Cabrera is batting only .188 with a .111 average through nine at-bats that end on the first pitch this year. However, manager Terry Francona said the team will not ask Cabrera to alter his approach at the plate.

Fantasy Tip: It's a small sample size so far this season, so don't blow it too far out of proportion. Expect his average on balls put in play on the first pitch to progress more toward his career numbers as the season progresses.

Cleveland Indians SS Asdrubal Cabrera started each of the past three openers in the two-hole, but manager Terry Francona used Cabrera in the seventh spot of the order Monday, March 31, against the Oakland Athletics. "Mostly because of balance," Francona said. "I hit him first a lot this spring, just because I wanted him to get that extra at-bat. We couldn't hit him sixth. We could've hit him fifth. I love (OF Michael Brantley) hitting fifth and I like our balance."

Indians | Keeping Asdrubal Cabrera at cleanup

Thu, 08 Aug 2013 18:00:26 -0700

Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona said he will continue to have SS Asdrubal Cabrera bat fourth in the starting lineup even though he is hitting only .183 since July 4. "You go through runs where you get cold, you get hot," Francona said. "Cabby's got a pretty good track record. If you move Cabby too soon, say, down to sixth or seventh, he's going to get hot. It's like if you're playing 50 bucks, 50 bucks, 50 bucks, and all of a sudden you get hot and you're playing for five. He's going to get hot, and I'd like to get the most out of it and keep him where he is. "
