Sat, 01 Sep 2001 07:31:58 -0700

The Seattle Times reports the Seattle Seahawks face some big decisions after today's pre-season game as the must cut 20 players from their current roster of 73. "There are still some competitive situations for guys, especially in backup positions," Seahawks Coach Mike Holmgren said. QB Brock Huard appears to need a huge game today to unseat Trent Dilfer as the team's No. 2 QB. The only starting job to be decided is at split end, where top draft pick Koren Robinson and Karsten Bailey are contending. Robinson appears to have a slight edge. TEs James Hill, Scot Osborne and Russell Stewart are fighting for the third TE spot. Cedric Woodard and Jeremy Staat are dueling for a roster spot as the team's backup nose tackle.

Cardinals | News & Notes

Wed, 04 Apr 2001 09:50:45 -0700

The Arizona Republic reports the turnout at the Arizona Cardinals voluntary off-season workouts is good, and most of the team's key offensive players have been there. "We have a lot of guys out there - and some guys who are going to wish they were out there," coach Dave McGinnis said. WR Mar Tay Jenkins is getting a lot of attention from WRs coach Jerry Sullivan. The team needs him to step up and he could even be the No. 3 WR if a move needed to be made with either Franks Sanders or Rob Moore because of the salary cap situation. QBs Jake Plummer, Dave Brown and Chris Greisen have been attending regularly. The Cardinals had an interest in DL Jeremy Staat who signed with Seattle on Tuesday, but McGinnis said although he liked Staat's 6-foot-6, 310-pound size, but the Cardinals did not immediately offer a contract because of concern over a shoulder on which Staat had off-season surgery.

The Arizona Republic reports Cardinals WR Rob Moore was on the field yesterday for informal workouts with the new offensive coaching staff. He was observing and counseling the team's younger receivers. Moore is trying to come back from last year's torn ACL. He said he is encouraged by his rehabilitation. Free agent DL Jeremy Staat is hopeful of signing on as a free agent. He wants to prove he can still play at a high level. He can play defensive end or tackle, but prefers tackle. He currently weight 310 pounds and he believes he could play within 5 pounds of that weight if positioned at tackle. Cardinals coach Dave McGinnis said he wanted to take a look at Staat because he believes Staat still has untapped potential and because the Cardinals have a big need for defensive linemen.

Steelers | Staat Looking to Gain Stats in '99

Fri, 02 Jul 1999 10:00:00 -0700

RealPittsburgh reports second-year pro DL Jeremy Staat is looking to shine in the NFL this year after having a very poor year in '99 ... so poor that he didn't collect any stats in the regular season. "I know what I'm doing. I know the defense. I know my responsibilities," he said. "It was just a matter of learning how to play, how to obtain my gap. I came from a 4-4 where we were shooting the gaps. It was kind of hard coming in here and being a decoy, getting in there and holding up the gap so other guys could make plays."
