Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said QBs Carson Palmer and Terrelle Pryor will compete for the team's starting quarterback job; however, Palmer will begin the competition as the No. 1 guy. "Carson goes into the offseason as the starter, certainly," Allen said. "But we will see what happens."

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said defensively is where the team must look to improve the most this offseason. The Raiders will look at the NFL Draft and free agency to address the unit. "Specifically, we have to really work to improve some things defensively to give us an opportunity to play defense the way that we want to be able to play defense," Allen said. "There are some pieces in place. Obviously this year we're not quite as a hamstrung with the draft picks and the salary cap, so we're going to have a little more flexibility to make a few more moves and do a few more things to help us from a personnel standpoint with our team."

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said the team will spend the offseason looking at how to incorporate an offensive scheme around the talents of RB Darren McFadden. "That's one of the things that we're going to look at when we get back to Oakland is we're really going to look at the things that Darren McFadden does really well and we're going to try to ask him to do those things as much as possible, limit the times that we ask him to do some of the things that he may not be as good at," Allen said. "All of us as players have strengths and weaknesses, and we want to try to play to our best players' strengths as much as possible."
Fantasy Tip: Allen's biggest error in his first season as head coach may have been hiring Greg Knapp as his offensive coordinator. Knapp's zone-blocking scheme was not a fit for McFadden; he has shown during his career to be more effective as a downhill runner. The Raiders also didn't exploit McFadden's talents as a receiver enough. Expect those areas to improve in 2013 with a new scheme.

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said new assistant head coach/offensive line Tony Sparano will add an element of toughness to the offense in 2013. "... The thing that most impressed me about his time in Dallas, about his time there in Miami is that he always had some tough football teams," Allen said. "That's the thing that I think he can bring to our team, to our offense, is a sense of toughness. As well as a guy who's been through it; he's been a head coach in this league, he's been a coordinator so there are experiences that he can help us all through."

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said QBs Carson Palmer and Terrelle Pryor will compete for the team's 2013 starting quarterback job, although Allen added he still believes Palmer is an effective starter. "Carson Palmer did an outstanding job for us last year. We feel really good about Carson at the quarterback position moving forward. And obviously, we want to create competition at all levels of our team ... I feel good about Carson. Terrelle did some nice things in the final game of the season last year, and so it will be interesting to see how he does moving forward."
Fantasy Tip: While competition is a good thing and Pryor has some raw ability, expect Palmer to remain the starter heading into the 2013 campaign. His best years are likely behind him, but Palmer nevertheless threw for 4,018 yards with 22 touchdowns this past season. Yes, most of those yards came in garbage time with Oakland playing from behind, but Palmer was also in a scheme that didn't suit his talents as a downfield passer. He should benefit with an improved run game, as the Raiders are returning to a power-running scheme in 2013.

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said he is not looking back to his decision of hiring former offensive coordinator Greg Knapp and his zone-blocking scheme. RB Darren McFadden, in particular, struggled with the scheme, averaging just 3.3 yards per carry in 2012. "I'm not going to look back and try to say what could have, would have, or should have been," Allen said. "I'm looking forward to what we need to do to try to get this team better in the future."

Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen will reportedly be back in 2013 despite a poor season. As will general manager Reggie McKenzie; however, the team could look to alter their front-office structure. According to sources, owner Mark Davis thinks highly of Ray Anderson, the NFL's vice president of football operations, and some believe he could join that organization if the right opportunity arose.

Oakland Raiders QB Terrelle Pryor saw action in one series during his team's game Sunday, Dec. 16, against the Kansas City Chiefs. Coach Dennis Allen said game situations will dictate Pryor's play for the remainder of the season. "How much he plays, I don't know the answer to that exactly, but we'll see on a game-by-game basis," Allen said.
