Roy Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune, reports the University of Tennessee are interested in Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers coach Joe Barry for their defensive coordinator position. Barry said he is interested in the job but it is not known if the Buccaneers will allow him to leave the team.

Rick Stroud, of the St. Petersburg Times, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers coach Joe Barry has been contacted about becoming the University of Tennessee's next defensive coordinator. New Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley has contacted Barry twice since getting hired Jan. 16. Barry said, "Of course, I'm very interested. Yes, it's college football. But you're talking about the chance to be a defensive coordinator at a big-time program like Tennessee in the Southeastern Conference. It would be a good opportunity. We'll see what happens."

Updating a previous item, Scott Reynolds, of the Pewter Report, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebackers coach Joe Barry will accept an offer to become the defensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions, according to sources close to the situation. Barry's contract with the Buccaneers expired at the end of the season, and it is believed he has already been offered the position by Lions head coach Rod Marinelli. Marinelli was interested in hiring Barry last season but was unable to with Barry still under contract with Tampa Bay.

Barry is Lions head coach Rod Marinelli's son-in-law.

" I'm a professional. My goal in 2006 is to be the best linebackers coach in the National Football League. After 2006, we'll take it from there. If something happens for me in the future somewhere else, great. If not, I love Tampa. I'm in no hurry to get out of here."
