Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said the team sees RBs C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson as No. 1 running backs and both will see playing time. Marrone said the team will favor the running back that is more productive during games.
Fantasy Tip: It is not known how the team will divide the playing time among the two running backs, but Spiller and Jackson should be in the starting lineup most weeks for owners.
Mon, 11 Nov 2013 12:37:32 -0800
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) was on the field for only 22 of the team's 67 offensive snaps during the team's Week 10 game, but head coach Doug Marrone said Spiller was not limited because of his ankle injury. Marrone said the team planned to use RB Fred Jackson more during the game and that Spiller's playing time will vary from week to week.
Fantasy Tip: The team likely will continue to use Spiller and Jackson each game, but their production will change each week depending on what the team wants to do on offense. Both should be in the starting lineup most weeks.
Fri, 01 Nov 2013 11:16:53 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) fully participated in practice Friday, Nov. 1, and is probable for Week 9.

Thu, 31 Oct 2013 12:42:01 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Oct. 31.
Fantasy Tip: It looks like Jackson will be good to go in Week 9. Get him into your starting lineups as you normally would.
Thu, 31 Oct 2013 12:40:18 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle), WR Stevie Johnson (hip), LB Manny Lawson (hamstring), QB EJ Manuel (knee) and CB Brandon E. Smith (illness) all were limited in practice Thursday, Oct. 31. WR Marquise Goodwin (elbow), DT Kyle D. Williams (Achilles) and RB Fred Jackson (knee) all were full participants. QB Thaddeus Lewis (ribs) and WR Chris Hogan (back) both did not participate in practice Thursday, Oct. 31.
Thu, 31 Oct 2013 11:41:10 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday, Oct. 31, but is expected to play in Week 9 against the Kansas City Chiefs after sitting out due to a "nagging" high ankle sprain in Week 8. "I feel good about C.J. playing," head coach Doug Marrone said. "In talking with him, without any setbacks, we feel like he'll be ready to go."
Fantasy Tip: Despite the encouraging news on Spiller, he remains a pretty risky start this weekend against a tough Chiefs defense. Fred Jackson (knee) should continue to see the majority of the carries, too. Consider Spiller more of an RB3 or flex option.
Wed, 30 Oct 2013 13:02:55 -0700
Buffalo Bills QB Thad Lewis (ribs), RB Fred Jackson (knee), DT Kyle D. Williams (Achilles) and WR Stevie Johnson (hip) all did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 30. Wed, 30 Oct 2013 09:12:18 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) is not participating in practice Wednesday, Oct. 30.
Fantasy Tip: The Bills are likely just resting F-Jax for the upcoming week. He faces a tough matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs this weekend, but with C.J. Spiller (ankle) still banged up, it'll be hard to keep him out of your starting lineups.
Fri, 25 Oct 2013 13:55:09 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Oct. 25, and is listed as probable for Week 8.
Fantasy Tip: Jackson probably will receive most of the playing time at running back with C.J. Spiller being listed as doubtful for the game. Jackson should be in the starting lineup for most fantasy owners.
Fri, 25 Oct 2013 10:03:08 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) is listed as doubtful for Week 8 but will remain a game-time decision, according to head coach Doug Marrone. RB Ronnie Wingo was signed off the practice squad for depth.
Fantasy Tip: Plan to keep Spiller on your bench this week. Marrone has been adamant all week that Spiller isn't right and needs to rest. Fred Jackson will see the majority of the workload and needs to be in all lineups.
Thu, 24 Oct 2013 14:38:21 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) seems to understand that his ankle injury robs him of his most important asset: his speed. "Everybody understands that speed and quickness are 98 percent of my game. If I'm not able to go out there and make a guy miss with my quickness it kind of works in their favor. But to me I think I can out run a lot of guys with a bad ankle. But the quickness and the cutting part is the hurdle I have to climb over," Spiller said. It seems as though head coach Doug Marrone is leaning toward resting Spiller in Week 8 over reducing his role.
Fantasy Tip: Everything is pointing toward Spiller taking a rest in Week 8. Keep him on your bench this weekend if that's the case. Fred Jackson's value receives a big boost.
Thu, 24 Oct 2013 12:34:09 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) was upgraded to a limited participant in practice Thursday, Oct. 24.
Fantasy Tip: F-Jax was likely being rested yesterday when he didn't practice. He will play this weekend, and depending on the status of C.J. Spiller (ankle), could have a sizeable workload against the New Orleans Saints.
Thu, 24 Oct 2013 12:29:48 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) missed his second straight day of practice Thursday, Oct. 24, but said there is "no feud" between himself and head coach Doug Marrone on the condition of his ankle. "I have no problem with Coach Marrone. I think we have a great relationship. Concerning my injury, I think we're both on the same page. He wants what's best for me, and he also wants what's best for this team. He's going to make the right decision," Spiller said. "And I'm going to back him. So there's definitely no feud, no miscommunication." Marrone has indicated that Spiller may not be feeling that great and hinted that the team could sit him out in Week 8.
Fantasy Tip: There's a very real chance that Spiller is held out against the New Orleans Saints. Plan for that possibility. Fred Jackson is a must-start either way.
Wed, 23 Oct 2013 13:46:48 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.
Fantasy Tip: Jackson is likely to play this week, short of a setback, still keep an eye on this one moving forward, and plan on using him as you normally would, for now.
Wed, 23 Oct 2013 12:53:17 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) said his ankle is improving. "A whole lot better. 10 times better," Spiller said. "There's a couple more hurdles that I need to pass over before I'm 100 percent. I definitely feel a whole lot better today than I did last Wednesday." Spiller said he's better than head coach Doug Marrone made him out to be earlier this week. Spiller's workload has been limited lately because Marrone said "there is going to be a setback" each week. Spiller had just six carries for 11 yards in Week 7.
Fantasy Tip: It's not going to be completely up to Spiller. If Marrone doesn't feel that Spiller will be as effective, he will continue to limit him in favor of Fred Jackson. For now, as long as Spiller is playing, temper your expectations.
Wed, 23 Oct 2013 09:02:28 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) is not participating in practice Wednesday, Oct. 23.
Tue, 22 Oct 2013 15:43:08 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) said he expects to deal with pain in his knee during the week throughout the rest of the season, but he intends to keep playing through it.
Fantasy Tip: This is very similar to C.J. Spiller's (ankle) situation, but F-Jax's situation appears to be less severe. Regardless, it's something to watch, but for now, Jackson will continue to see a very healthy share of the workload.
Tue, 22 Oct 2013 11:59:27 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) has been playing hurt for the last three games, and head coach Doug Marrone said that Spiller's progress will be monitored moving forward. "The injury has everything to do with it, not some of it," said Marrone of Spiller's production. "We're looking at the production, seeing if he's getting better and not putting him out there in jeopardy."
Fantasy Tip: Don't be surprised if the Bills ease up on Spiller's workload in upcoming weeks to keep him healthy for the home stretch of games. With Fred Jackson able to handle more of the workload to ease the pressure on Spiller, the first-round fantasy pick is better left as an RB2 or high-end RB3 while he continues to play at less than 100 percent.
Sun, 20 Oct 2013 10:24:40 -0700
Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) was able to return after missing playing time because of a knee injury.
Sun, 20 Oct 2013 10:04:42 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (undisclosed) suffered an undisclosed injury during the team's Week 7 game and was tended to by trainers.
Fri, 04 Oct 2013 10:49:56 -0700
Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel (knee) is dealing with a lateral collateral ligament injury and will miss a few weeks.
Fantasy Tip: Manuel will be back, but until then, the team's fantasy-relevant receivers - Stevie Johnson (back), Robert Woods, Scott Chandler - will take a value hit with Jeff Tuel at the helm. Expect Buffalo to lean more on Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller in the coming weeks.
Thu, 03 Oct 2013 16:48:33 -0700
Buffalo Bills RBs C.J. Spiller (ankle) and Fred Jackson (knee) are both active for the team's Week 5 game against the Cleveland Browns Thursday, Oct. 3. Jackson will wear a brace on his sprained left knee Thursday night.
Fantasy Tip: Start Jackson and Spiller at your own risk; Tashard Choice could easily be mixed in heavily if both Jackson or Spiller aggravate their injuries or are ineffective. Jackson's injury is one that would seem to be very tough to come back from, but the team seems more confident in his availability than Spiller's, for what it's worth.
Wed, 02 Oct 2013 15:20:03 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) was limited in practice Wednesday, Oct. 2, and is probable for Week 5.
Fantasy Tip: Jackson is a risky play because of not only the injury but uncertainty in the backfield.
Wed, 02 Oct 2013 09:11:38 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) said he will definitely play Week 5 even though he is still dealing with soreness in his knee.
Tue, 01 Oct 2013 16:22:29 -0700
Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) was limited in practice Tuesday, Oct. 1, and he was wearing a brace on his knee.
Tue, 01 Oct 2013 14:41:32 -0700
Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone is confident that RB Fred Jackson (knee) will be able to play in the team's Week 5 game against the Cleveland Browns Thursday, Oct. 4. RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) could be a game-time decision.
Fantasy Tip: F-Jax is the safer player of the two, but that doesn't make him a very good option on a short week. Jackson will likely yield plenty of carries to Tashard Choice if he plays.
Tue, 01 Oct 2013 13:11:42 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) is participating in practice Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Fantasy Tip: With the uncertainty in the Bills backfield, if you have another option this week, it may be wise to go in that direction. Jackson is a risky play.
Mon, 30 Sep 2013 15:48:10 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) was limited during practice Monday, Sept. 30.
Mon, 30 Sep 2013 12:31:53 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (ankle) will be able to play Week 5 even though he suffered a sprained ankle in the team's Week 4 game.
Fantasy Tip: Even though Spiller will be able to play Week 5, he should be considered a risky fantasy starter because he could be limited by the injury. Fred Jackson could also be limited because of his knee injury, so Tashard Choice probably will be more involved in offense than usual even if the other two play because the team has to play Thursday. Choice could be a waiver wire target for desperate owners or owners that have Spiller or Jackson.
Sun, 29 Sep 2013 17:43:01 -0700
Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) said Sunday, Sept. 29, that he suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in Week 4 against the Baltimore Ravens, but he expects to play in the Week 5 game Thursday, Oct. 3, against the Cleveland Browns.
Fantasy Tip: Backfield partner C.J. Spiller (ankle) was also dinged up in the game. If neither can go after the short week, Tashard Choice could potentially make the start.
Fri, 27 Sep 2013 12:20:31 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (quadriceps) practiced in full Friday, Sept. 27, and is probable for Week 4.
Fantasy Tip: Spiller has been a huge disappointment through three weeks in large part to Fred Jackson cutting into his workload. Spiller hasn't been productive when he does touch the ball, though. It won't be this bad all season long, however, so continue to start him.
Tue, 24 Sep 2013 10:17:28 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller (thigh) has been frustrated with the lack of a running game through three games. Spiller rushed only 10 times for nine yards before leaving with an injury. "They pretty much put a lot of people in the box and dared our passing game to beat them," Spiller said. Rookie QB EJ Manuel was just 19-for-42 and was sacked eight times in the loss to the New York Jets in Week 3.
Fantasy Tip: As Jerry Sullivan and Spiller note, teams will likely continue to put extra defenders in the box to stop Spiller and Fred Jackson and force Manuel to beat them. The Baltimore Ravens in Week 4 figure to use this strategy. It could be another tough contest, as the Ravens haven't allowed a passing touchdown in the last two weeks.
Mon, 23 Sep 2013 10:03:17 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson rushed 13 times for 67 yards in Week 3's loss to the New York Jets, but 59 of those yards came on one play. RB C.J. Spiller (thigh) gained just nine yards on nine carries in the first half of the game and was injured in the second half. Spiller has 43 carries for just 153 yards and no touchdowns through three weeks.
Fantasy Tip: Jackson should continue to see a healthy share of touches in Buffalo's backfield, especially now that Spiller is a little banged up. Both players are worthy of being in your starting lineup, but Spiller no longer is a sure-fire No. 1 RB until he sees more touches.
Tue, 10 Sep 2013 15:46:06 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson was the team's best offensive weapon in their Week 1 loss to the New England Patriots, and he still feels that he's physically capable of being productive, even with RB C.J. Spiller expected to be the featured back. "I still feel like I can play. I've said it all along, I wouldn't be in there if I didn't feel like I can still compete and play at this level. Yesterday was just a good way to hit the ground running and show I can still compete," Jackson said. Spiller didn't seem right against the Pats, though, and Jackson took advantage of his opportunity. With the no-huddle offense being used, it will be a lot to ask of Spiller to stay in over a full drive.
Fantasy Tip: OK, so, F-Jax proved a point in Week 1: that he hasn't disappeared and can still be a very productive fantasy back in this offense alongside Spiller. Spiller won't always take a back seat to Jackson, though, but he might not have an overwhelmingly large workload over Jackson, like some may have guessed.
Sun, 08 Sep 2013 18:16:43 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller managed just 41 rushing yards on 17 carries, and he also lost a fumble, in Week 1 against the New England Patriots. Spiller's struggles gave RB Fred Jackson more of an opportunity. Jackson ended up with 13 carries for 67 yards, and he added a team-high 41 receiving yards on four receptions.
Fantasy Tip: It is too early to hit the panic button, but this is not what fantasy owners expected from their early-round fantasy pick. Spiller will look to get on track in Week 2 against the visiting Carolina Panthers.
Sun, 25 Aug 2013 17:15:55 -0700
Buffalo Bills WR Brad Smith could shift back to the quarterback position, if needed, according to head coach Doug Marrone. The head coach also mentioned RB Fred Jackson as an emergency quarterback possibility, with QBs EJ Manuel (knee) and Kevin Kolb (concussion) dealing with injuries.
Fantasy Tip: The chances of Jackson or Smith under center is lessened a little with the signing of Matt Leinart, and acquisition of Thaddeus Lewis. However, it wouldn't be surprising to see either see snaps in the preseason finale just in case.
Tue, 06 Aug 2013 07:11:40 -0700
Buffalo Bills RBs Tashard Choice, Fred Jackson and Kendall Gaskins are in competition for the goal line running back job.
Sat, 01 Jun 2013 20:12:56 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller intimated that he expects to get the ball more in 2013, after being asked his thoughts on head coach Doug Marrone's statement that he'd go with the hot hand at running back.
Fantasy Tip: This could simply be a player saying the political thing, because he said he was fine with his utilization amount last year. Even in his limited work last year, he was one of the most explosive backs. He's probably going to keep Fred Jackson in a backup, changeup role. Spiller has borderline RB1 draft value but the upside to be a top-three option at the position, riding what could be a dangerous new offense. It'd help if they get consistent quarterback play, though a lack of it didn't stop him last year when he did damage in space
Fri, 22 Mar 2013 05:34:19 -0700
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) will be a full participant when the team's offseason program begins in two weeks.
Sat, 09 Feb 2013 07:13:58 -0800
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) said he is fine with the team using a committee approach at running back in 2013 between himself and RB C.J. Spiller. "If that's what it is, us sharing reps, we have no problems with that," Jackson said. "I don't have a problem with that. I'm looking forward going out there and making the best of my opportunities whenever I get on the field, I'm sure C.J.'s the same way. Whatever we can do to get a win, we're going to do, that's what we're about."
Fantasy Tip: Jackson has played in no more than 10 games in each of the last two seasons. He also turns 32 later this month and has been dealing with knee issues. He averaged just 3.8 yards per carry in 2012. Expect Jackson to still have a role in the offense in 2013; however, the time has come for Spiller to receive a greater workload after his breakout campaign.
Fri, 08 Feb 2013 21:29:19 -0800
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) said Friday, Feb. 8, that he will see a doctor next week, as he recovers from the knee injury he suffered two months ago. "I've been doing rehab the entire time," Jackson said. "I've been able to get up and do some movement on it. I have a meeting with the doctor next week. I'm sure I'll be cleared and be able to do everything."
Sat, 26 Jan 2013 10:17:06 -0800
Buffalo Bills running backs coach Tyrone Wheatley said the team will be using RBs C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson in several offensive sets next season. "I would just say multiple," Wheatley said. "I know that's kind of vague and it doesn't really clear things up, but we're a multiple set. We could do two-back, we could be one back. We could be single back, we could be shotgun. It's a multiple set."
Thu, 03 Jan 2013 11:14:24 -0800
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson said he'd be willing to serve as RB C.J. Spiller's backup next year if the new head coach installs Spiller as the starting running back. Spiller racked up 1,244 rushing yards and averaged six yards per carry this season while Jackson dealt with a slew of injuries and had a career-worst 3.8 yards per carry.
Tue, 11 Dec 2012 14:05:51 -0800
The Buffalo Bills officially placed RB Fred Jackson (knee) on the Injured Reserve Tuesday, Dec. 11.
Mon, 10 Dec 2012 18:57:19 -0800
Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey said Monday, Dec. 10, that RB Fred Jackson (knee) is likely headed for season-ending Injured Reserve after his Week 14 knee injury. "He's not going to make it. He's going to be out for the rest of the year," Gailey said. "It looks like (IR), but let me hold off to see what is officially, but that looks like the plan, yes." Gailey added that Jackson's injury is more likely to be a four-to-five week injury, rather than two-to-three weeks, as previously reported.
Mon, 10 Dec 2012 11:21:30 -0800
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) said he's dealing with a Grade 2 sprain of his medial collateral ligament in his knee. "I mean technically it's a tear off the bone, because you tear the ligament away from the bone. So that's why some people say it's a tear, but the ligament itself is intact. It's just pulled away from the bone a little bit," Jackson said.
Mon, 10 Dec 2012 10:02:30 -0800
Updating a continuing story, Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) believes he will be placed on Injured Reserve, even though his injury does not require surgery. "... I think they might just put me on Injured Reserve so they can get somebody to come in and play because I won't be able to play the rest of the regular season it looks like," Jackson said. "They probably will let me know for sure later today."
Mon, 10 Dec 2012 09:57:42 -0800
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) does not require surgery after suffering a sprained ligament in his right knee in Week 14, according to a person familiar with the running back's injury. He will miss between two and four weeks.
Mon, 10 Dec 2012 07:58:28 -0800
Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) has a Grade 2 sprain of his medial collateral ligament. His timetable is unchanged.
Mon, 10 Dec 2012 07:19:11 -0800
Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (knee) suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in Week 14 that will likely end his season.
