San Francisco Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval enlisted the help of Detroit Tigers 1B Miguel Cabrera this winter while working to improve his right-handed swing. Sandoval said he took more swings right-handed this offseason because he struggled so much from that side last year. "He's way more agile in the box in terms of controlling the weight shift," hitting coach Henry Meulens said. "He's not gliding through the swing. He's using all his strength, and that's when he has a chance to impact the ball."
Meulens noticed that Sandoval is much more balanced at the plate from the right side now, and he's not way out in front on pitches, like he was doing before. Sandoval hit only one homer in 148 at-bats from the right side last season, and he has only seven homers in 509 at-bats from the right side in the last four years.
Fantasy Tip: Is it a coincidence that the Panda played better in the second half when he started losing weight last year? Probably not, which makes his drastic improvement in conditioning this offseason even more intriguing. He's also in a contract year. Many things are pointing to a bounce-back year, if he can stay healthy.

San Francisco Giants president and CEO Larry Baer said the team is open to talking a long-term extension with 3B Pablo Sandoval. "On opening day, if Pablo doesn't have a long-term deal it doesn't mean he's not going to be a Giant. There have been no discussions yet. We want to let Pablo get acclimated and then the evaluation starts. We've got the month of March. We'll see," Baer said.

San Francisco Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval plans to have an entourage travel with him this year to keep him in the gym and outside of clubs. His brother, Luis, will also travel with him as his cook. Because of his improved conditioning this offseason, Sandoval apparently has more bat speed, quickness and energy on the field. He weighed in around 250 pounds Tuesday, Feb. 18, after weighing 290 pounds last August. Manager Bruce Bochy said he might not look to substitute Sandoval late in games on defense if he continues to improve his conditioning.

San Francisco Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval was not injured when he was seen limping into first base during a Venezuelan Winter League game last week. The Giants checked in with trainers after he left Game 3 of the championship series in the eighth inning. "It's evident he's worked hard," manager Bruce Bochy said. "We don't have to spend all spring trying to get him where we want him. The focus can be on getting ready for baseball. We'll be ahead of the game, not like where we were last year."

San Francisco Giants 3B Pablo Sandoval will stay in Venezuela and work out this offseason instead of working out in Arizona at the team's year-round facilities, which was the original plan. Head trainer Dave Groeschner would have preferred if Sandoval had come back to be under the team's supervision. Sandoval has gained more weight in previous seasons when he's stayed in his native country. Sandoval plans to return to the U.S. in mid-January and spend a month getting ready for spring training.
