Padres | Eric Stults making adjustments

Wed, 09 Jul 2014 11:51:33 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Eric Stults has sped up his delivery, which has increased his fastball velocity. He's also spending less time in between pitches in order to keep hitters off balance.

Fantasy Tip: Stults has allowed only four earned runs in his last three outings while striking out 13 in 19 1/3 innings. The increased velocity could increase his strikeout totals a bit, but he's still mainly a matchup play in the deepest of mixed leagues.

Padres | Jedd Gyorko to DL

Fri, 06 Jun 2014 13:40:12 -0700

The San Diego Padres placed 2B Jedd Gyorko (foot) on the 15-day disabled list with left foot plantar fasciitis Friday, June 6, and removed SP Eric Stults from the bereavement list in a corresponding move. Gyorko's DL stint is retroactive to June 4.

Fantasy Tip: Well then. This isn't an unsurprising move, but the fact that Gyorko has been this dreadful this year has. Plantar fasciitis is a very tricky injury, and one that can disable a player for much of the year. See Albert Pujols in 2013. Jace Peterson now has an open window to seize valuable everyday playing time at second base. He can help tremendously with his speed and on-base abilities in NL-only and deep mixed universes.

Padres | Roster moves

Tue, 03 Jun 2014 14:35:11 -0700

The San Diego Padres recalled SP Jesse Hahn and P Jason Lane from the minors Tuesday, June 3, and placed SP Eric Stults on the bereavement list and optioned RP Donn roach to Triple-A El Paso in corresponding moves.

Fantasy Tip: Hahn is making his major league debut against the Pittsburgh Pirates Tuesday night, but it could end up just being a spot start with Andrew Cashner (elbow) on the verge of returning from a DL stint.

Padres | Robbie Erlin moved up in starting rotation

Sat, 05 Apr 2014 12:34:37 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Robbie Erlin has been moved up one day in the starting rotation so that the Cleveland Indians will not end up facing southpaws in consecutive games. Erlin will start against Cleveland Monday, April 7, with right-handed SP Tyson Ross pitching Tuesday, April 8, and left-handed SP Eric Stults pitching Wednesday, April 9.

Padres | Set post-break rotation

Sun, 14 Jul 2013 17:14:33 -0700

San Diego Padres manager Bud Black revealed his post-All-Star break starting rotation. SP Jason Marquis will start the first game of the road series against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, July 19, with SP Edinson Volquez working Saturday, July 20, and SP Eric Stults pitching Sunday, July 21.

Fantasy Tip: If you are in a fantasy league which plays during the short week, those pitchers can be used as you normally would.

Padres | Tyson Ross headed back to rotation

Wed, 15 May 2013 15:11:10 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross (shoulder), who missed 14 games with a subluxation of his left shoulder, will continue pitching out of the bullpen until he's healthy enough to swing a bat again. Once he can, he'll jump back into the starting rotation. "We still see him as a starting pitcher," said manager Bud Black. "But that will be left shoulder-related and whether he's physically able to do that. Right now, his strength is improving. In due time, he has to get in a cage."

Fantasy Tip: Ross has struggled with command in his career, but late last season he showed ground-ball rates that gave optimism for his future. A move to SD made him even more intriguing. Clayton Richard (illness) will return to the rotation soon, so it's unknown who exactly Ross would replace in the starting five when he's healthy. Jason Marquis or Eric Stults might be in jeopardy if they aren't pitching well by then.

Padres | Andrew Cashner to join rotation

Tue, 23 Apr 2013 15:24:29 -0700

San Diego Padres SP Andrew Cashner will make the start against the San Francisco Giants Friday, April 26, and manager Bud Black foresees Cashner staying in the rotation for the long term, based on his performance. Cashner is expected to throw 80-90 pitches Friday.

Fantasy Tip: Cashner is essentially taking Tyson Ross' (shoulder) rotation spot, but the important part is that Black and the coaching staff are completely open to keeping Cashner, one of their better strikeout-inducing pitchers, in the rotation. Jason Marquis or Eric Stults may lose their rotation spots when Ross returns, or Ross could be sent to a long-relief role. The bottom line here, though, is that Cashner should now be owned in all formats now that he has a rotation spot once again.

Padres | Rotation close to being finalized

Wed, 27 Mar 2013 14:21:16 -0700

San Diego Padres SPs Edinson Volquez, Clayton Richard, Eric Stults and Jason Marquis make up the first four spots in the starting rotation, and SPs Tyson Ross and Andrew Cashner (thumb) are believed to be battling it out for the final spot. The team won't need a fifth starter until April 6.

Fantasy Tip: Both Ross and Cashner could be quite productive in SD's five-man rotation. The team may decide to be cautious with Cashner as he comes off an unfortunate hunting accident, but they'd prefer not to send him to the bullpen because he has major upside as a starter. Cashner has much more upside as a high-strikeout pitching commodity and should be owned in more leagues than Ross.

Padres | Have several open rotation spots

Tue, 12 Feb 2013 12:34:57 -0800

The San Diego Padres have several open starting rotation spots after SPs Clayton Richard, Edinson Volquez and Jason Marquis. Ps Anthony Bass, Casey Kelly, Tyson Ross, Eric Stults, Freddy Garcia and Robbie Erlin are all in the picture. SP Tim Stauffer (elbow) is about two weeks behind the other pitchers. SPs Andrew Cashner (thumb), Joe Wieland (elbow) and Cory Luebke (elbow) aren't options because they are rehabbing from injuries. Cashner is expected to be back on a mound by March 1 and Wieland and Luebke won't return until midseason or later after having Tommy John surgery.
