Bears | Huston not kicking well enough to take Gould's job

Tue, 08 Aug 2006 20:10:36 -0700

K.C. Johnson, of the Chicago Tribune, reports Chicago Bears rookie PK Josh Huston is expected to challenge incumbent PK Robbie Gould for the team's place kicker job, but Huston feels he hasn't kicked well enough yet to do so. Gould is trying to improve his long-range kicking skills. Gould went just 3-for-8 from that distance last season, missing from 48 yards, 47 twice, 44 and 43. A penalty nullified his only attempt from 50-plus yards, a successful 52-yarder in the season finale against Minnesota. Gould feels the competition can only help him get better. "Robbie came from off the radar and is getting more consistent," special teams coach Dave Toub said. "And Josh is more than a camp leg. It's fun watching everything play out."

Bears | Smith discusses plans at place kicker

Sun, 07 May 2006 06:58:35 -0700

Gene Chamberlain, of the Daily Southtown, reports Chicago Bears head coach Lovie Smith discussed the format he would use for the battle at place kicker between incumbent PK Robbie Gould and rookie PK Josh Huston. It won't necessarily take the shape of a day-to-day field goal battle during training camp. "We're just going to do it like every other position," Smith said. "We'll let both of them get their kicks each day, then we'll make a decision during the game who will get the majority of the reps. We just want to put the guys in a situation for them to prove exactly what they have, whether they can help us or not." Huston said his agent had sought out the Bears initially, but didn't target them out of a lack of respect for Gould, who became the starter last year.

Buccaneers | Team checking out Huston

Sun, 26 Feb 2006 19:39:21 -0800

Roy Cummings, of the Tampa Tribune, reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been checking out Ohio State PK Josh Huston at the NFL Combine. According to ESPN's analysis of Huston, he set a school record by recording touchbacks on 49 of his 70 kickoffs last year and had touchbacks on 54 of 77 kickoffs overall as a collegian. At the Combine, Huston recorded one touchback on 11 kicks, but several others landed inside the five yard line. Most projections have Huston being taken on the second day of the draft. "My goal is just to get drafted, that's the first thing," Huston said. "More importantly I want to go somewhere where they're excited about me being there." The Buccaneers have always been hesitant to carry two kickers, so Huston would have to prove he can kick field goals consistently to earn a spot in Tampa, should the team select him. He doesn't believe that will be a problem.

NCAA | Huston talks about kicking differences

Thu, 23 Feb 2006 17:07:44 -0800

During his NFL Combine interview, Ohio State PK Josh Huston said that he's learning to make little adjustments to the NFL rules. "It's not a huge deal," Huston said. "The ball doesn't go as far. It's a new ball and even if you hit it really hard it's not going to go as far. So the key is to put a good stroke on it, hit it solid, and it will go far enough." Huston added that he likes the accuracy of the pro ball.
