New York Jets defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell had tremendous praise for Jets SS Sam Garnes after his performance Sunday, Oct. 19, against the Houston Texans, reports NewYorkJets.com. "Strong safety Sam Garnes had a great game," Cottrell said. "It was one of the best games he has had. He was making plays all over the field. Sam was very aggressive." For the game, Garnes had seven tackles and one assist.

Michael Eisen reports for Giants.com S Omar Stoutmire is preparing for his new role as the team's starting free safety. S Shaun Williams will move to strong safety to replace Sam Garnes. Williams is confident the new tandem will succeed. "It's a great opportunity," Stoutmire said. "I've been waiting for an opportunity for a while. The last two years we had two really, really good safeties in Shaun and Sam. There was really no need for a change. But I'm grateful for the opportunity."

Updating a previous story, the Detroit Free Press reports Detroit Lions president Matt Millen spent Monday morning at the Combine. He was scheduled to meet free agent S Brian Walker (Dolphins), possibly to finalize a contract agreement, over dinner Monday evening. Walker's agent, Peter Schaffer of Denver, said: "I think they definitely want him. We're very impressed with their interest." Walker was scheduled to have a physical examination and meet with other team officials and coaches Tuesday in Detroit. Word is Walker wants a deal bigger than the one the Jets gave S Sam Garnes. That deal was for three years and $2.725 million.

Updating previous reports, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports free agent S Sam Garnes (Giants) has reached a three-year contract agreement with the New York Jets that's worth $2.725 million. He'll receive a $500,000 signing bonus and base salaries of $525,000 (2002), $750,000 (2003) and $750,000 (2004). There are also roster bonuses of $75,000 for this year and $125,000 for the next two years.

The NY Daily News reports the New York Jets remain interested in signing free agent S Sam Garnes (Giants) as a replacement for S Victor Green. Garnes will visit the Jets on Friday. The Philadelphia Eagles, Cincinnati and San Francisco are also interested in his services. He has apparently ruled out a return to the Giants.

The New York Daily News reports the New York Giants have released S Sam Garnes. The Giants are expected to try and re-sign Garnes at a cheaper salary. Garnes, who was due $1.7 million in 2002 and $2 million in 2003, has expressed an interest in returning to the team at a cheaper price.

Giants.com's Michael Eisen reports the New York Giants won't be moving CB Jason Sehorn to safety this year, he's staying at cornerback. Both Sehorn and defensive coordinator Johnnie Lynn dismissed the rumors that Sehorn could be moved to safety. They said such a move was never seriously considered. The team has made it a priority to re-sign S Shaun Williams, an unrestricted free agent, and are still deciding what to do with S Sam Garnes, who has been approached about a pay cut according to previous reports.

Neil Best reports for NY Newsday the New York Giants plan to release LB Jessie Armstead next week. Cutting Armstead next week instead of in June would limit the cap savings to $1 million or so, but the Giants apparently do not want to leave him in limbo for three months. Other veterans who are likely to be released include OT Lomas Brown, S Sam Garnes, QB Jason Garrett and TE Howard Cross, but those four could return later for the minimum salary.

The New York Daily News reports the New York Giants are believed to be about $5 million above the salary cap for this year. In the next week, they're expected to begin purging their roster to open up additional room. OG Glenn Parker and CB Dave Thomas could be cut and LB Jessie Armstead and S Sam Garnes may be forced to restructure their contracts or be released.

The New York Post reports the New York Giants are going to ask S Sam Garnes to take a pay cut to stick with the team. Garnes is scheduled to earn $1.7 million this year. If he's unwilling to agree to take a pay cut, the team would release him, move Shaun Williams from FS to SS and find a new free safety.

Garnes fell victim to his 2002 base salary of $1.7 million (that counts nearly $3 million against the salary cap. The team is expected to re-sign free agent S Shaun Williams and perhaps move him from free safety to strong safety.

Kimberly Jones of the Star-Ledger reports the New York Giants are singing the praises of New Orleans Saints QB Aaron Brooks. Brooks called himself "the new millennium quarterback." According to Giants DE Kenny Holmes, "Not only is he a guy that can thread the needle, putting the ball between two defenders, but he's a guy that can beat you with his feet." "He has no flaws, really," safety Sam Garnes said. "He's a young guy, so he's still learning. But he's the total package." The Giants coaches fear Brooks -- who, in his third year, has eight career starts, including postseason -- as much as they do any quarterback in the league -- including Philadelphia's Donovan McNabb.

However, Garnes is expected to be back for the afternoon practice. OT Lomas Brown came back to practice after an MRI revealed no damage.
