Bears | Turner says expectations on Cutler too high Thu, 07 Jan 2010 07:13:09 -0800 ESPNChicago.com reports former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Ron Turner said during a radio interview that the expectations on QB Jay Cutler this season were too high as well as unrealistic. "He came into a difficult situation with the expectations as high as they were. As soon as he got here everybody said 'Jay Cutler is here,' and now the expectations went through the roof. I don't know if that was realistic with the issues we had on the offensive line and with the young receivers. We all knew it was going to take some time. I'm not sure anybody else did. I think there was a huge weight on his shoulders to come in and really produce at a high level," Turner said.

Bears | Cutler not throwing out of the pocket as much Wed, 30 Dec 2009 21:14:27 -0800 Dan Pompei, of the Chicago Tribune, reports Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has not thrown outside of the pocket as much as he has in past years. According to STATS, only 6 percent of Cutler's passes have come outside of the pocket this year. Nearly 12 percent of his passes came outside the pocket in his previous three years when he was with the Denver Broncos. Cutler's career passer rating outside the pocket is 114.3 compared to 79.3 inside the pocket. Offensive coordinator Ron Turner sounds like he wished he had moved Cutler more this season, but he acknowledged that he veered from that plan in part because of game situations and the styles of defenses the Bears faced. Opponents often lined up their defensive ends wide, making it more difficult to move the pocket.

Head coach Lovie Smith said, "I wish I could tell you why. We're working on trying to see exactly what we can do to fix those things. But on a 5-9 team, a lot of things go wrong. Jay is a part of that."
