The Chicago Cubs have recalled RP Randy Wells from Triple-A Iowa to fill the vacancy on the 25-man roster created by the retirement of RP Kerry Wood.

Chicago Cubs SP Ryan Dempster (quadriceps) is likely to make his return from the disabled list to start against the Cincinnati Reds Thursday, May 3. He threw a successful bullpen Monday, April 30. Dempster will be replacing SP Randy Wells in the rotation.

Chicago Cubs SP Randy Wells is scheduled to start Saturday, April 28, against the Philadelphia Phillies, in place of the injured SP Ryan Dempster (quadriceps). It appears Dempster will then be able to take his next turn in the rotation, so Wells is likely to get just the one more start.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said Sunday, April 21, that SP Randy Wells will start Sunday, April 22, against the Cincinnati Reds in place of the injured SP Ryan Dempster (quadriceps).

Chicago Cubs SP Ryan Dempster (quadriceps) underwent an MRI exam on his right quadriceps Friday, April 20, and his next start against the Cincinnati Reds Sunday, April 22, is in question, according to a source familiar with the situation. SP Randy Wells will come up from the minors to start if Dempster can't go.

The Chicago Cubs optioned SP Randy Wells, SP Casey Coleman and C Welington Castillo to Triple-A Iowa. They also reassigned C Blake Lalli, P Scott Maine, RP Blake Parker, SP Travis Wood, OF Dave Sappelt and 2B Matt Tolbert to minor league camp.

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said SP Jeff Samardzija appears to be a near-lock for the starting rotation. The fifth spot will be a competition between SPs Rodrigo Lopez, Chris Volstad, Randy Wells and Travis Wood.

The Chicago Cubs agreed to terms with SP Randy Wells on a one-year deal worth $2.705 million Tuesday, Jan. 17, as the two sides avoid an arbitration hearing.

The Chicago Cubs have a plethora of options for the starting rotation as they approach spring training this year. The candidates include SPs Matt Garza, Paul Maholm, Ryan Dempster, Travis Wood, Chris Volstad, Randy Wells and Casey Coleman. Wood and Maholm are the only left-handers in the group.
