Vikings | Text messages now an issue in tampering allegations

Jason Wilde, of the Wisconsin State Journal, reports two NFL sources said Wednesday, July 23, Green Bay Packers retired QB Brett Favre sent text messages back-and-forth with Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. This is in addition to alleged cell-phone records of calls between the parties. The Packers have accused the Vikings of tampering with Favre. A league source confirmed Favre was using a Packers-issued cell phone in alleged communication with Childress and Bevell. Text messages would also help the Packers prove their case.

Judd Zulgad, of the Star Tribune, reports Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress has thought about giving up play-calling duties. During an appearance on KFAN Friday, March 23, a listener asked Childress if there are any plans to hand over play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell. Childress said, "We're always in a dialogue, the offensive staff and I, and that's not something I've completely excluded from my thinking right now. But I think as we get a little bit closer [to the season] it will define itself." Quarterbacks coach Kevin Rogers is another candidate to call plays.

Adam Doctolero, of KFAN.com, reports the Minnesota Vikings wide receivers appear confused with slight adjustment calls. On several occasions, head coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell had to run the same play twice because a wide receiver would run the wrong route. The coaching staff has been preaching communication Sunday, July 30, as it appears motion and quick adjustments will play a significant role in the offense.

Bob McGinn, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports the Minnesota Vikings are expected to interview Green Bay Packers assistant coach Darrell Bevell for their offensive coordinator position Thursday, Jan. 12. If all goes well, he will be hired by the end of the week. An NFL source said it was a foregone conclusion in coaching circles that Bevell had the job.

Tom Silverstein, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports the Green Bay Packers gave the Minnesota Vikings permission to talk to quarterbacks coach Darrell Bevell about a job on new head coach Brad Childress' staff. Bevell's contract with the Packers expires Jan. 31 and he probably will be allowed to leave if he is offered the offensive coordinator's job.
