University of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is rumored to be a strong candidate to become the next head coach for the Kansas City Chiefs starting next year.

The Associated Press reports the University of Iowa has given head coach Kirk Ferentz a salary increase. He was given a restructured contract that boosts his annual salary to $2.84 million from $1.44 million, with a one-time payment of $1.4 million. The deal does not extend his contract, which expires after 2012.

ESPN.com reports Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is withdrawing his name from consideration for NFL head coaching vacancies, according to ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

Jason Wilde, of the Wisconsin State Journal, reports two sources said the Green Bay Packers remain interested in Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz for their head coaching vacancy. Because Ferentz is in the midst of a recruiting contact period which continues through Jan. 28, the Packers would possibly have to wait until after that to make a push for him. Iowa athletic director Bob Bowlsby has said several times that Ferentz's contract requires that he inform the school if he intends to interview with an NFL team.

Pat Harty, of the Iowa City Press-Citizen, reports University of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz is expected to withdraw his name from head coaching consideration within the next day or two, according to ESPN's John Clayton. Clayton believes the Houston Texans have the best chance of landing Ferentz and there is speculation he will interview with them early next week.

John McClain, of the Houston Chronicle, reports the Houston Texans are expected to interview University of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz, possibly as early as next week. He is reportedly one of the team's top two candidates.
