The Jacksonville Jaguars officially released P Matt Turk Tuesday, Oct. 11. He averaged just 39.7 yards on 27 punts this year. Also, the team waived TE Brett Brackett from the practice squad.

Jacksonville Jaguars P Matt Turk has been attempting a rugby style of kicking in short-punting situations in the last several weeks, something he has never done before. The team prefers directional punting, and Turk's strength is kicking the ball hard and long. Turk now feels comfortable using his new style of kicking in games.

Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams head coach Scott Linehan said he expects P Andy Groom and P Matt Turk to split the punting chores in the team's preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 10. "I hope that the better man wins," said Groom. "I just want a fair shot, that's all." Getting an even opportunity has been difficult, Groom said. "This is my fourth camp, I haven't had one yet," he said. "You get a lot of guys that have been around forever, and the coaches feel good if they've got game experience. It's just hard to break into the league." Turk has improved after struggling early in camp, when he missed a couple of workouts after fluid collected behind the knee on his right (kicking) leg.

"He has a baker's cyst," head coach Scott Linehan said. "It's something that happens on the back of your knee and it will turn color and he had some swelling. He had some fluid drained out of it as well. He punted real well yesterday. We are just managing it."
