San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis said it will be difficult seeing QB Alex Smith play for another team in 2013 after being traded to the Kansas City Chiefs. "It was tough for me because I really care about Alex," Davis said. "I love the guy. It's hard to see him leave, but I know the business. I understand it. It's the nature of the business." Davis added Smith handled his role well after he was relegated to backup status following the emergence of QB Colin Kaepernick. "He's a classy guy. You saw what happened to him this year. He remained a 49er and he didn't complain. He didn't go to coach saying, 'Coach I should be the starter. I had a concussion and you took me out.' He didn't do none of those things."

Baltimore Ravens LB Ray Lewis struggled in coverage during Super Bowl XLVII, which led head coach John Harbaugh to tell his defensive assistant coaches that they needed to make sure their calls didn't leave Lewis covering San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis or WR Michael Crabtree over the middle of the field. "We can't let Ray be matched up on 85 or 15 all day when we're playing quarters," Harbaugh told his coaches.

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis has bought into the team's philosophy that they will throw to the receiver or tight end with the most advantageous coverage, according to offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Davis acknowledged when he first entered the NFL he was all about himself and his numbers. However, now he is just happy to be on the field even if he isn't catching passes. "I'm not worried about the statistics, because those things will come," Davis said. Davis only had six catches for 61 yards during the team's final six regular-season games, but he has caught six passes for 150 yards and a touchdown on 11 targets in two playoff games this year.

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis finished the regular season with 41 receptions, 548 yards and five touchdowns, all his lowest totals since the 2008 season. "It is a different feeling for me because it's been a tough season as far as just the feeling of being involved," Davis said. "To me, it's not a bad thing, because it's something I had to get used to this year. Each and every season in the past, I'm used to helping the team where I'm just catching balls and things like that. This year's been a little different."
