Bears | Devin Hester opposed to signing Donovan McNabb

Mon, 05 Dec 2011 07:48:20 -0800

Chicago Bears WR Devin Hester said he is not in favor of the team signing free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings). Hester believes McNabb could not get up to speed fast enough with the Bears' offense to make a difference. And Hester even suggested that McNabb's arrival could be counterproductive, as any time spent working with McNabb would take away from time the rest of the offense needs to work with QB Caleb Hanie. "It's going to be tough right now to pick up a quarterback that hasn't played in the Mike Martz offense," Hester said. "This is a difficult offense to run, so as far as a quarterback who hasn't played in the offense, right now it's going to be a waste of time."

"Hopefully, we can directional kick and do some different things but if we have to kick to him, like last week, we played (New Orleans Saints RB Darren Sproles) who is a dynamic kick returner and we were able to keep the ball away from him and limit his touches, that's what we'll have to do."

Bears | Devin Hester will be huge part of offense

Mon, 08 Aug 2011 13:58:27 -0700

Chicago Bears WR Devin Hester, who has been named the starting flanker, will be in for a larger role on offense this season. The team's coaching staff evaluated game film from last season and recognized Hester was not used enough. "He'll be a huge part of the offense," head coach Lovie Smith said.

Offensive coordinator Mike Martz said Hester played even better than Martz thought he did. "We had trouble getting him the ball, but I don't foresee that being an issue this year," Martz added. So far in training camp, Hester has been standing out and a favorite target of QB Jay Cutler. Cutler said Hester isn't thinking while on the field now, showing Hester is growing comfort in his second season in Martz's system. Hester said he spent 70 percent of his pre-snap thoughts on his assignment each play, with the other 30 percent going toward reading the defense. This year, he said he is spending 100 percent of the time reading defenses.

The team does not plan to take him out of his roles on special teams, but Martz said the team is going to find a balance so they are sure Hester remains fresh this season.

Thu, 14 Jul 2011 06:42:34 -0700

Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Martz said his team could play in the Hall of Fame Game on a day's notice if necessary. "If we report to camp and they say, 'Tomorrow, you're playing the game,' that'll be plenty," Martz said Wednesday, July 13. WR Devin Hester said he believes players would need a week-and-a-half of practice to prepare for the game. Martz wouldn't say exactly how much time they would need, but he did say they could be ready rather quickly. "You don't do game plans for those games, anyway," Martz said. "It's not like a regular-season game at all. There's not a whole lot of game preparation. You look at personnel, things of that nature, and clean things up execution-wise. The preparation for preseason games, particularly the first one, is not real hard."
