Panthers | Jonathan Stewart to miss Week 16

Wed, 18 Dec 2013 12:10:55 -0800

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said RB Jonathan Stewart (knee) will not play Week 16. Rivera would not say if Stewart will be able to play Week 17.

Fantasy Tip: DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert likely will continue to get most of the work at running back. Williams should be seen as a No. 2 running back or flex option this week. Tolbert could be a flex option but could also be bench if an owner has better options.

Panthers | Believe Jonathan Stewart has torn MCL

Mon, 09 Dec 2013 10:42:33 -0800

The Carolina Panthers believe RB Jonathan Stewart (knee) has a torn medial collateral ligament.

Fantasy Tip: DeAngelo Williams likely would get most of the carries while Stewart is out and will be more valuable in fantasy leagues. Mike Tolbert probably will also receive more play time, which will help his value.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams limited in practice

Wed, 04 Dec 2013 12:09:05 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (quadriceps) was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Fantasy Tip: Williams felt fine after missing Week 13 and said he expects to suit up in Week 14 against the New Orleans Saints. Williams may split a little more of the workload with Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert if he's not 100 percent. However, he remains the lead back and is at least an RB3 or flex play.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart does little

Sun, 01 Dec 2013 19:03:08 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart made the start in Week 13 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with RB DeAngelo Williams (quadriceps) inactive. Stewart ran 14 times for just 39 yards, and he had two catches for three yards.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart did little with his opportunity, and was actually outrushed by QB Cam Newton (5-68-1) and RB Mike Tolbert (9-48-0). Stewart is only worth a look as a flex fantasy option in deeper leagues if he starts again, but the team might be better off leaning more on Tolbert.

Sun, 01 Dec 2013 08:42:28 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (quadriceps) has been declared inactive for the team's Week 13 game.

Sun, 01 Dec 2013 06:31:09 -0800

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (quadriceps) is very doubtful for the team's Week 13 game.

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (quadriceps) did not practice Friday, Nov. 29.

Panthers | Entire backfield misses practice

Wed, 27 Nov 2013 14:27:29 -0800

Carolina Panthers RBs DeAngelo Williams (quadriceps), Jonathan Stewart (ankle) and Mike Tolbert (knee) all missed practice Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers are likely just resting their three-headed rushing attack for this weekend against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but stay tuned the rest of the week. Williams' value has taken a hit with J-Stew splitting carries with him. Williams remains the lead back, slightly, but he's more of a flex in a tough matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 13.

Panthers | RBs split carries

Mon, 04 Nov 2013 08:16:04 -0800

Carolina Panthers RBs DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart and Mike Tolbert had 13, nine and six carries, respectively, in Week 9.

Fantasy Tip: All three are worth rostering, but Williams appears to be losing his grip as the most utilized back. Stewart was effective in his first action and should continue to cut into Williams' share.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart to be activated from PUP

Fri, 01 Nov 2013 10:45:53 -0700

The Carolina Panthers will activate RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles) from the Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, Nov. 2, and he'll make his season debut in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons. RB DeAngelo Williams will remain the starter, though, and he practiced Friday, Nov. 1, after missing the last two days with a bruised quadriceps. Head coach Ron Rivera wants Stewart to get six to 10 carries against the Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: J-Stew should be owned in all leagues by now. His role will be limited initially, but he could gain more carries as he gets his legs underneath him. This limits the values of Williams and Mike Tolbert and makes playing any of the three a crapshoot on most weeks.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams misses practice

Thu, 31 Oct 2013 13:22:07 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (quadriceps) did not practice for the second straight day Thursday, Oct. 31.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers are optimistic that Williams will play in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons, but two straight missed practices will make his owners uneasy. He could relinquish carries to Mike Tolbert and Jonathan Stewart. Tolbert's value as an RB3 or flex play is strengthened if Williams is limited.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart looks good

Wed, 30 Oct 2013 13:41:20 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles), who is still currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list, looked and felt great in practice Wednesday, Oct. 30, and the team expects him to be active in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons. "I feel ready," Stewart said. "Today was a good step forward putting the pads on. It felt good going out there and hitting the field full speed with some contact and running plays with contact."

Stewart had the majority of snaps in practice with RB DeAngelo Williams (quadriceps) being held out for precautionary reasons. Head coach Ron Rivera continues to say that Williams will remain the starter and that RB Mike Tolbert will continue to see touches. "We can't force things," Rivera said. "We can't. What we've got to do is Mike (Shula, offensive coordinator) has to continue to call his game the way he wants to call it, and at the end of the day when you get your opportunity make the best of it."

Fantasy Tip: The three-headed monster in Carolina is back. Even though Williams and Tolbert will continue to see their touches, Stewart's return will make them less attractive, especially after a few weeks when he has his legs under him in game situations. DAW is more of an RB3 now with Tolbert and J-Stew representing RB depth for your fantasy squad.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart likely active in Week 9

Wed, 30 Oct 2013 12:17:59 -0700

Outside of a setback, it is likely that Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) will be active in the team's Week 9 game.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart should be seen as nothing more than an option to be picked up off the waiver wire in deeper leagues at this point. He is likely to be eased back into action and is still behind DeAngelo Williams on the depth chart.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart expects to play in Week 9

Tue, 22 Oct 2013 13:27:55 -0700

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is expecting to return to play in Week 9 against the Atlanta Falcons. He returned to practice for the first time Tuesday, Oct. 22, since injuring his right ankle Nov. 26 of last season. He will remain on the Physically Unable to Perform list for the team's game Thursday, Oct. 24. Stewart is expected to split time with RBs DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert when he returns, but head coach Ron Rivera said Williams will remain the "premiere guy."

Panthers | Timetable unknown for Jonathan Stewart

Tue, 22 Oct 2013 09:34:31 -0700

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera is unsure when RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) will be able to return to game action after he resumes practicing this week. "We'll have to see," said Rivera, not ruling out Stewart for Thursday, Oct. 24. "He had a really good week last week, but again we're going to go through the whole procedure and make sure we're really doing things right with him after each day." Stewart could be ready by Nov. 3 against the Atlanta Falcons.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart could return in Week 9 against the Falcons, but we're not holding our breath. J-Stew should be picked up if he's on the waiver wire, but he'll likely be eased into action behind DeAngelo Williams, who is having a fine season. Stewart should be seen as nothing more than RB depth right now.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart wants to practice before returning

Mon, 14 Oct 2013 13:34:58 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) said he wants to practice for more than a week before returning to the field. He said he is managing the pain and soreness in his ankle but still has his speed and explosiveness. Stewart said he plans to play at some point this season.

Fantasy Tip: It appears DeAngelo Williams has a hold on the starting running back job, so Stewart may return as a backup. Owners should look at Stewart as a flex option or as a handcuff to Williams. Stewart could also be used as depth at running back for some fantasy owners.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams surprises in win

Sun, 22 Sep 2013 18:06:01 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams posted his first 100-yard rushing game of the season in Week 3 against the New York Giants, carrying 23 times for 120 yards and a 5.2-yard average. He did not find the end zone, but FB Mike Tolbert was able to get in on a 2-yard scamper in the first half.

Fantasy Tip: Unfortunately for Williams and his fantasy owners, the Panthers have a bye in Week 4. When he returns in Week 5, Williams will be a solid low-end RB2 or flex play in most fantasy leagues of 12 or more teams.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams blames himself for loss

Sun, 08 Sep 2013 16:48:22 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams carried 16 times for 76 yards in the Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks, and he added three catches for 14 yards. However, he had a costly lost fumble late in the fourth quarter, and he blamed himself for the loss afterwards. "It ultimately came down to that fumble, let's just get that out of the way," Williams said. "It was my fault."

Fantasy Tip: Despite the fumble, Williams is still a viable RB3 or flex fantasy option heading into Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills.

Panthers | Kenjon Barner not active

Sun, 08 Sep 2013 09:01:21 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Kenjon Barner (foot) is not active in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Fantasy Tip: This is just a reminder; we knew that Barner wouldn't play a few days ago. This is another reminder that DeAngelo Williams will see the lion's share of the workload with Jonathan Stewart out for at least the first six weeks of the season. Williams' matchup against the Seahawks isn't ideal, though.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams to see bulk of work

Wed, 28 Aug 2013 07:10:36 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams is expected to receive the bulk of the work among the running backs to start the season.

Fantasy Tip: It's fair to wonder what the 30-year-old has left in the tank. He's an adequate RB3, but he really needs to produce to avoid the aging running back purgatory on the market.

Panthers | Sources: Jonathan Stewart to start on PUP

Tue, 27 Aug 2013 10:22:03 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) will start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to sources.

Fantasy Tip: J-Stew would miss the first six games but still could fly as a bench grab in the middle to late rounds. DeAngelo Williams becomes a legitimate RB3 with some weeks as an RB2. Rookie speedster Kenjon Barner (foot) also gains cred as an RB5 speculation, but we'll have to see how he responds to his recent foot injury. Mike Tolbert could siphon a touchdown or two in the time J-Stew is out and could be a last-ditch pick, as well. Remember, though: The entire backfield's TD upside is restricted by Cam Newton's feet.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart unlikely to play in Week 1

Thu, 22 Aug 2013 14:36:14 -0700

The Carolina Panthers are optimistic that RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles) will be ready for the regular season opener, but ESPN's Adam Schefter believes it's probably not realistic.

Fantasy Tip: The Panthers could place Stewart on the PUP and risk losing him for at least six weeks of the season. DeAngelo Williams will be the starting running back for any games Stewart misses, followed by rookie Kenjon Barner. It isn't wise to draft J-Stew until we have a clearer picture of whether he'll be ready for Week 1.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart could go on PUP list

Tue, 20 Aug 2013 16:02:36 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles) will not play in the team's third preseason game Thursday, Aug. 22, and the club isn't ruling out placing him on the Physically Unable to Perform list, which would cause him to miss at least the first six weeks of the season. "At this point anything is an option," head coach Ron Rivera said. "What you're hoping is you can get him on the football field and we'll see once the doctor gets a chance to look at him." Stewart has yet to practice with the team and will meet with doctors soon. RB DeAngelo Williams has been taking reps with the first-team offense, and RB Kenjon Barner has seen increased opportunity.

Fantasy Tip: Obviously, this makes Stewart a very risky running back selection. Williams' stock is rising as a result, but neither is attractive as anything more than a very weak RB3. With Mike Tolbert and Barner in the picture, too, this may be one of those running back situations to steer clear of on draft day.

Panthers | Offense struggling

Fri, 16 Aug 2013 13:11:05 -0700

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton and the first-team offense has scored only one touchdown in eight series over two preseason games so far. The one touchdown came on a short field (18 yards) after a defensive interception. Their other seven series have produced four punts, two field goals and an interception. Newton completed only eight of his 17 passes for 112 yards Thursday, Aug. 15. RB DeAngelo Williams had 12 carries for 39 yards, but offensive coordinator Mike Shula kept his play calls conservative.

Fantasy Tip: Shula probably isn't showing his full hand in the preseason, but it's not good to see the Panthers offense struggling the way it has. Still, it's way early and they haven't had time to settle into games, so don't be too alarmed. Jonathan Stewart has missed time due to injury, too.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams acts as workhorse

Fri, 16 Aug 2013 10:51:43 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams carried the ball 12 times in the preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday, Aug. 15, and those carries came during the team's first 27 offensive plays. He gained 39 yards, with the longest run going for eight yards.

Fantasy Tip: Williams wants the ball more, but he'll have to do more with it when he does get his touches. He should still be treated as a low-end RB2 or must-start RB3 or flex fantasy option at this point.

Panthers | Want to run balanced offense

Tue, 30 Jul 2013 18:25:35 -0700

Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula made it clear during training camp that he wants to run a balanced offense that takes advantage of all of the team's talent at the skill positions. The read option may only be a small part of the team's offense. "You can't just rely on (RB DeAngelo Williams) and (RB Jonathan Stewart), running the football and you can't just rely on (QB Cam Newton)," Shula said. "We have to spread that out. Hopefully, in doing that, with the guys that we have here personnel wise, we can keep teams off balance and make them understand they're going to have to account for everybody on every part of the field."

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart's participation uncertain

Wed, 24 Jul 2013 12:59:16 -0700

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said team does not know how much RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) will be able to practice until he undergoes an extensive physical Thursday, July 25.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart's health is in question entering training camp which may hurt is fantasy value. Stewart will probably have to share carries even if he is healthy because the team also has DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert in their backfield as well as Cam Newton. Stewart should be seen as a No. 3 fantasy running back or an option in the flex position.

Panthers | Kenjon Barner looks explosive

Thu, 13 Jun 2013 10:23:10 -0700

Carolina Panthers RB Kenjon Barner has looked explosive and fast in practice. They might figure out how to get the rookie into the backfield mix.

Fantasy Tip: This would especially be true if Jonathan Stewart's ankles keep him out for much of their summer workouts. Barner is nothing more than a last-round flyer in deeper redraft leagues, but he's someone to watch over the long term.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart very limited

Thu, 23 May 2013 11:53:12 -0700

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) was very limited during organized team activities Thursday, May 23.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart is recovering from offseason ankle surgery and there is no rush for him to be on the field at this point. Stewart should be seen as a No. 3 running back at this point because he probably will be splitting carries with DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert.

Panthers | Restructure DeAngelo Williams' deal

Wed, 15 May 2013 06:07:24 -0700

The Carolina Panthers restructured RB DeAngelo Williams' contract. He was in the third season of a five-year, $43 million contract and was scheduled to earn $5 million with an $8.2 million salary cap number for 2013. Williams will still receive $5 million in cash this year, but the deal has been restructured in a way that reduces his cap number to $5 million, a cap savings of $3.2 million that leaves the team $8.46 million under their adjusted 2013 salary cap number of $126.232 million. Williams was scheduled to earn $4.75 million in non-guaranteed base salary with a $250,000 workout bonus this season. Under the renegotiated contract, Williams' base salary was lowered to $850,000 and his workout bonus reduced to $150,000. The remaining $4 million was converted to a signing bonus, which will be prorated against the Panthers' cap at $800,000 per season through 2017.
