Fri, 21 Oct 2011 08:58:46 -0700 Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig hinted that he may step into the compensation negotiations between the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox involving general manager Theo Epstein. A deal is apparently close to being finalized Friday, Oct. 21, but if it lingers, Selig may step in to help mediate the impasse. San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer will be joining Epstein in Chicago as the general manager. Epstein originally asked new Padres GM Josh Byrnes to come over to Chicago, but Byrnes declined the opportunity. Padres assistant general manager Jason McLeod will also be heading to Chicago when the deal is done.

Thu, 20 Oct 2011 08:53:32 -0700 The Boston Red Sox proposed that the Chicago Cubs take SP John Lackey's contract as part of the compensation for general manager Theo Epstein's move to Chicago. Lackey has three years remaining on his five-year, $82.5 million pact. However, the expected compensation will involve Cubs' minor leaguers, although not OF Brett Jackson, P Trey McNutt or P Matt Szczur. Cash will not be part of the swap. While the San Diego Padres have not confirmed the report, general manager Jed Hoyer is expected to be hired as the Cubs' next general manager under Theo Epstein. San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer is a strong candidate to join the Cubs as the new general manager, with Epstein being president of baseball operations. Compensation for Hoyer is not expected to be a problem because of the close relationship between Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts and Padres vice chairman Jeff Moorad.
