MLB | Bud Selig may intervene in Theo Epstein deal

Fri, 21 Oct 2011 08:58:46 -0700

Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig hinted that he may step into the compensation negotiations between the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox involving general manager Theo Epstein. A deal is apparently close to being finalized Friday, Oct. 21, but if it lingers, Selig may step in to help mediate the impasse.

San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer will be joining Epstein in Chicago as the general manager. Epstein originally asked new Padres GM Josh Byrnes to come over to Chicago, but Byrnes declined the opportunity. Padres assistant general manager Jason McLeod will also be heading to Chicago when the deal is done.

Red Sox | Trying to get rid of John Lackey

Thu, 20 Oct 2011 08:53:32 -0700

The Boston Red Sox proposed that the Chicago Cubs take SP John Lackey's contract as part of the compensation for general manager Theo Epstein's move to Chicago. Lackey has three years remaining on his five-year, $82.5 million pact. However, the expected compensation will involve Cubs' minor leaguers, although not OF Brett Jackson, P Trey McNutt or P Matt Szczur. Cash will not be part of the swap.

While the San Diego Padres have not confirmed the report, general manager Jed Hoyer is expected to be hired as the Cubs' next general manager under Theo Epstein. There will be no compensation for Hoyer, according to sources. Padres vice president of baseball operations Josh Byrnes will become the new GM in San Diego.

Cubs | Could hire Theo Epstein during World Series

Wed, 19 Oct 2011 11:54:11 -0700

The Chicago Cubs could announce the hiring of Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein during one of the off days of the World Series, with the first coming Friday, Oct. 21. San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer is a strong candidate to join the Cubs as the new general manager, with Epstein being president of baseball operations. Compensation for Hoyer is not expected to be a problem because of the close relationship between Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts and Padres vice chairman Jeff Moorad.

Cubs | Theo Epstein announcement could take a while

Wed, 19 Oct 2011 08:56:06 -0700

The Chicago Cubs' finalization of the deal that will bring Boston Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein to Chicago will likely have to wait until after the World Series due to MLB policies discouraging teams from making big announcements during the Fall Classic. There is speculation that Epstein may be trying to pry general manager Jed Hoyer away from the San Diego Padres. The Cubs and Red Sox are still trying to agree on compensation for Epstein, with the Red Sox trying to replenish their pitching in the minors. The BoSox are believed to be targeting Ps Trey McNutt and Christopher Carpenter.
