A deal is apparently close to being finalized Friday, Oct. 21, but if it lingers, Selig may step in to help mediate the impasse.
San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer will be joining Epstein in Chicago as the general manager. Epstein originally asked new Padres GM Josh Byrnes to come over to Chicago, but Byrnes declined the opportunity. Lackey has three years remaining on his five-year, $82.5 million pact. However, the expected compensation will involve Cubs' minor leaguers, although not OF Brett Jackson, P Trey McNutt or P Matt Szczur. Cash will not be part of the swap.
