The New York Jets have announced the team will honor retired LBs Mo Lewis and Marvin Jones during halftime of the Jets' home opener on Sept. 18, against the Miami Dolphins. Both players spent their entire NFL careers with the Jets before retiring on June 27. "It's rare today to have a player spend his entire career with one team, and in this instance, the Jets have two and it's a tribute to both gentlemen," said Jets general manager Terry Bradway.

Clayton Ferraro, of WINKtv.com, reports retired New York Jets LB Marvin Jones said he's considering pursuing a career in politics. Before he decides, he wants to figure out if he can help people more through his work in a public office or through his charitable foundation. Jones' charitable foundation just donated $5,000 to a local little league team in Estero, Florida.

According to the Associated Press, New York Jets coach Herman Edwards plans to rotate players at several positions. At MLB the team will rotate Marvin Jones and James Darling. Jones was not happy at all with the news. He was upset mainly because the coach never told him anything. "Sure, why not," Jones said when asked if he would have preferred to hear directly from Edwards about losing playing time. "But you know, I don't get into why people do certain things. I guess that's just some people. Get your answers from upstairs."

Updating earlier reports, ESPN.com's Len Pasquarelli reports LB Marvin Jones received a five-year, $12 million deal from the New York Jets, which includes a $3 million signing bonus. He'll have base salaries of $650,000 (2002), $1 million (2003), $1.65 million (2004), $2.2 million (2005) and $3.5 million (2006). In 2003 and 2004, $500,000 worth of Jones' salaries are guaranteed.

Updating an earlier story, the NY Times reports the New York Jets are expected to release LB Marvin Jones Tuesday. Jones and the Jets could not agree on how to restructure his contract. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said Jones could return to the Jets. Rosenhaus spoke to Coach Herman Edwards and Ted Cottrell, the defensive coordinator, yesterday. "Marvin is very interested in returning to the team," Rosenhaus said. "But it's going to be after we test the open market. We're not closing the door on returning, but right now we're pretty far apart in what we're interested in. There's a mutual understanding that just because he's a free agent doesn't mean he won't be back with the Jets. And we'll talk more as free agency starts."
