Megan Manfull, writing for the Sporting News, reports Houston Texans LB Sam Cowart missed all of the offseason workouts with minor injuries, but will likely push LB Wali Rainer early in camp for the middle linebacker starting job. It's the position most up in the air on the Texans. Rookie LB DeMeco Ryans could also possibly enter the fray in training camp. The coaches are high on Ryans, and still deciding between playing him at outside or inside.

Megan Manfull, of the Houston Chronicle, reports Houston Texans LB Sam Cowart (calf, Achilles' tendon) was injured the first day of practice last week and is still sidelined with a sore calf and sore Achilles. He could return as early as next week but is definitely targeting the start of minicamp June 7. Cowart is slated to be the Texans' starting middle linebacker since LB Kailee Wong (knee) remains sidelined because of knee surgery. LB Wali Rainer has been practicing with the first team in Cowart's place.

Wong likely will miss 5-8 weeks of the season. If newly signed LB Sam Cowart plays well while Wong is sidelined, Wong may move to outside linebacker.

The Washington Post reports Washington Redskins vice president of football operations, Vinny Cerrato, has contacted the agent for free agent LB Sam Cowart (Vikings), according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Cowart wants to continue to play middle linebacker, according to agent Paul Healy. Healy said Cowart has a visit planned this week, but not with the Redskins.

The Star Tribune reports the Minnesota Vikings are still determining the fate of LB Sam Cowart. He will be an unrestricted free agent in March. Agent Paul Healy said he has spoken with Rob Brzezinski, vice president of football operations, but Healy said Brzezinski did not indicate whether the team wants to re-sign Cowart. "I have talked to Rob, but the ball is in their court," Healy said. "Sam had a great experience with the Vikings and would like to be back but obviously he is going to look elsewhere (if it comes to that). We'll just have to wait and see."

The 30-year-old veteran has a history of leg injuries, and when told of his playing time thus far, Cowart said perhaps he should try to scale things back a little bit. "I didn't realize it until it was brought to my attention," Cowart said. "That's probably something we should look at. It's important to make sure I have my legs under me before the season starts."
