It's the position most up in the air on the Texans. Rookie LB DeMeco Ryans could also possibly enter the fray in training camp. The coaches are high on Ryans, and still deciding between playing him at outside or inside.

He could return as early as next week but is definitely targeting the start of minicamp June 7. Cowart is slated to be the Texans' starting middle linebacker since LB Kailee Wong (knee) remains sidelined because of knee surgery. LB Wali Rainer has been practicing with the first team in Cowart's place.

Wong likely will miss 5-8 weeks of the season. If newly signed LB Sam Cowart plays well while Wong is sidelined, Wong may move to outside linebacker.
