Lions | Pinner confident he will earn roster spot; faces uphill battle

Mon, 31 Jul 2006 22:11:45 -0700

Tom Kowalski, of mlive.com, reports Detroit Lions RB Artose Pinner faces an uphill battle to land a roster spot. With RBs Kevin Jones and Arlen Harris holding down the Lions' top running back positions; the addition of rookie RB Brian Calhoun may have sealed the end of his stay in Detroit for Pinner. "My whole thing, since college, is that I've never had the chance to come in and be `that guy.' Nothing has ever been given to me so I've always had to work," Pinner said. "I'm looking forward to working and making plays for this team and making this team." Pinner has raised his game in training camp, so far. Pinner dropped 10 pounds to increase his speed and agility and he has looked good in training camp. As the No. 4 back in the rotation, he doesn't get a lot of practice repetitions, but he's sparkled when he's had the chance. If the Lions do cut Pinner, it won't be until late in the preseason. He is great insurance in case another back is injured before the regular season.

NCAA | Calhoun has a decision to make

Fri, 25 Nov 2005 11:51:26 -0800

Tom Mulhern, of the Wisconsin State Journal, reports University of Wisconsin junior RB Brian Calhoun has a decision to make soon regarding his status for the 2006 NFL Draft. Calhoun said he will wait until after the season to weigh all the factors and make his decision. One team source said it is likely Calhoun will leave. Another source, who is close to Calhoun, said it will be a difficult decision. But the second source agreed it would not be surprising if Calhoun elects to leave. NFL scouts will love Calhoun's speed and how well he catches the ball (50 receptions). The biggest knock will be his lack of size - he's listed at 5-foot-10 and 194 pounds. ''Right now, I haven't even thought about it,'' Calhoun said of the draft. ''Obviously, it's going to be a tough decision. When that time comes, I'll cross that bridge. Right now, I'm coming back and we're just focusing on winning this game.''
