Tue, 22 Sep 2009 11:47:41 -0700 Jose de Jesus Ortiz, of the Houston Chronicle, reports former manager Jim Fregosi, free-agent manager Manny Acta (Nationals) and Houston Astros team official Al Pedrique are all candidates to become the Astros' manager next season.
Wed, 19 Nov 2008 21:04:42 -0800 The Philadelphia Inquirer reports there have been several changes to the Philadelphia Phillies scouting staff this week. Howie Freiling joined the Phillies as a special assignment scout after two decades in the New York Mets organization. Hank King, the Phillies' major-league advance scout since 1985, moved to the club's pro staff and his old spot remains open. Jim Fregosi Jr., who spent 15 of the last 17 seasons with the Phillies and is the son of former manager Jim Fregosi, had been a national cross-checker and an amateur scouting coordinator. He moves to the pro scouting staff and will mostly cover major-league teams. King and Fregosi will be joined on the pro staff by former amateur scouts Jerry Lafferty and Roy Tanner. Lafferty and Tanner will mostly cover minor-league teams. Jon Mercurio, who was a part-time pro scout last season, gets a full-time job. Former Phillies outfielder/pinch-hitter Del Unser and Dean Jongewaard remain in their roles with the big-league team.
Thu, 21 Sep 2006 23:27:35 -0700 The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports a trio of third-base coaches likely will receive interviews with the Florida Marlins for the soon to be open manager's job. The Atlanta Braves' Fredi Gonzalez, the Chicago White Sox' Joey Cora and the New York Mets' Manny Acta are three who have Latin roots and speak fluent Spanish, which would be considered a significant upgrade from the current staff. Other possible candidates to replace Joe Girardi include Triple-A Albuquerque manager Dean Treanor, Japanese League manager Trey Hillman, Braves special assistant Jim Fregosi, St. Louis Cardinals third base coach Jose Oquendo, New York Mets bench coach Jerry Manuel and Marlins broadcaster Cookie Rojas, although Rojas is more likely to fill a coaching role.

"Ned made it clear he had a few other people to talk to," said Fregosi. "I don't expect to hear anything until after Thanksgiving."
