Giants | Will recall two

Tue, 29 Jul 2014 13:53:43 -0700

San Francisco Giants 1B Travis Ishikawa and OF Juan Perez are expected to be recalled from Triple-A Reno, according a source.

Fantasy Tip: There may be fleeting NL-only value if either earns semi-regular playing time. However, taking a wait-and-see approach is advised.

Giants | Brandon Belt has broken thumb

Fri, 09 May 2014 20:53:17 -0700

San Francisco Giants 1B Brandon Belt (thumb) suffered a broken left thumb during the team's game Friday, May 9.

Fantasy Tip: Michael Morse and Buster Posey could be options to play first base while Belt is out of the lineup. The team could also recall Travis Ishikawa from Triple-A Fresno to see some time at the position. Gregor Blanco or Hector Sanchez could see more playing time depending on what the team does at the position. Ishikawa, Blanco and Sanchez likely would only be NL-only options if they get more playing time.

Pirates | Acquiring Ike Davis

Fri, 18 Apr 2014 15:27:22 -0700

The Pittsburgh Pirates are working with the New York Mets to acquire 1B Ike Davis, and Davis has approved the trade.

Fantasy Tip: The Bucs clearly aren't satisfied with Travis Ishikawa in a platoon at first base with Gaby Sanchez. Davis will essentially replace Ishikawa in that role. Davis' value probably won't increase all that much, but his playing time should increase if he's in a straight platoon with Sanchez.

Pirates | Not a cookie cutter platoon at 1B

Tue, 15 Apr 2014 18:17:48 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Tuesday, April 15, that the platoon at first base is not "cookie cutter" in nature, meaning left-handed hitting 1B Travis Ishikawa will not start against all right-handed pitching. Hurdle said he anticipated giving 1B Gaby Sanchez more at-bats against right-handed pitching. He has made just three starts through the first 13 games. "It's not all hard numbers," Hurdle said. "We're kind of old school here. We'll look at what our eyes tell us and what our gut tells us."

Fantasy Tip: Neither Ishikawa nor Sanchez have a whole lot of fantasy appeal outside of the deepest of NL-only formats. First base is kind of a black hole in the Steel City.
