Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Karstens (shoulder) could make just one more start this season Monday, Sept. 19, although he was pain-free in his most recent start Tuesday, Sept. 13. If Karstens is shut down, either Ps Aaron Thompson or Brian Burres would join the rotation for the end of the season.

Pittsburgh Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said the team will continue to use a six-man rotation for at least two more turns. SPs James McDonald, Brad Lincoln, Jeff Karstens, Charlie Morton, Jeff Locke and Ross Ohlendorf are the starters.

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Karstens (shoulder) will rejoin the rotation Tuesday, Sept. 13, against the St. Louis Cardinals. He has missed his last two starts because of shoulder fatigue.

Pittsburgh Pirates SP Jeff Karstens (shoulder) will be plugged back into the rotation Sept. 19, against the Arizona Diamondbacks. He has had his past two turns in the rotation skipped due to arm soreness and fatigue. "If he wasn't feeling so much better, and the results wouldn't have been good throwing so far, we would have shut him down," manager Clint Hurdle said Wednesday, Sept. 7. Karstens threw a bullpen session Wednesday and felt fine.

The Pittsburgh Pirates are leaning toward holding SP Jeff Karstens (shoulder) out for another start. He resumed playing catch Friday, Sept. 2. "Right now, it feels good, but I want to really make sure I don't rush it," Karstens said. "I want to make sure that my strength is really back. I do plan on pitching again at some point."
