Fri, 10 Feb 2012 22:04:19 -0800 Chicago Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said that the performance of RP Carlos Marmol in 2011 was unacceptable. However, he remains confident Marmol will bounce back. "I don't think what happened last year is acceptable," Hoyer said. "I think there's nothing more demoralizing to a baseball team than to win for 2:45 and then lose in the last 10. I think that happened a lot last year. If you look back, this guy has had some dominant years. Everyone said the slider wasn't quite the same last (year). Hopefully there are some mechanical things we can do to get that back."
Fri, 18 Nov 2011 17:21:51 -0800 Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum mostly blamed CL Carlos Marmol's slider for his struggles last season, saying it wasn't breaking as much as in recent years. "(And hitters) don't even have to worry about the fastball, because even if he throws it, it's a ball," Sveum said. "That said, he has to get back to some kind of fastball command."

Wed, 17 Aug 2011 12:51:47 -0700 Chicago Cubs manager Mike Quade plans to monitor RP Carlos Marmol closely after his velocity has dropped off considerably. "I think his velocity is down some this year," said Quade. "And during his real tough time, his slider wasn't sharp. We'll keep a close eye on Marmol like we do all of them. Recently, he's been good."
Wed, 17 Aug 2011 12:15:25 -0700 Chicago Cubs RP Carlos Marmol had pitched in six games in the last eight days before blowing the save Tuesday, Aug. 16. Marmol was throwing only 90 mph during his blown save and didn't have any bite on his slider. "Marmol is so mechanically unorthodox and so tough to keep in line (mechanically), whether it's his arm angle or the drive off the mound or everything that makes him good, mechanically it's difficult," manager Mike Quade said. "He's had a wonderful run here, and I think this is the first piece of adversity he's had in his career."
