Cubs | Carlos Marmol denies report

Wed, 15 May 2013 14:04:35 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Carlos Marmol is denying an Internet report saying that he wants out of Chicago.

Fantasy Tip: Marmol has been a disappointment again this year and quickly lost the closer's role in April. Now, Kevin Gregg has taken the job and Kyuji Fujikawa is in front of Marmol in the bullpen. He's lost most of the small fantasy value he had in all leagues. A change of scenery might be his only salvation at this point.

Cubs | Kyuji Fujikawa will not be used late yet

Fri, 10 May 2013 16:56:54 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said RP Kyuji Fujikawa will be used in earlier innings for the time being so the team can make sure he is fine. "We'll ease him in right now to make sure everything is good — velocity, command, life," Sveum said. "We'll ease him into whatever situation, sixth, seventh inning, depending on the score of the game, obviously."

Fantasy Tip: Fujikawa may not be used in late-inning situations at this point but should be owned in deep mixed leagues because Kevin Gregg only had a small sample size to prove himself and Carlos Marmol has struggled in the closer role.

Cubs | Kyuji Fujikawa activated

Fri, 10 May 2013 10:52:22 -0700

The Chicago Cubs activated RP Kyuji Fujikawa (forearm) from the 15-day disabled list Friday, May 10, and optioned RP Rafael Dolis to the minors in a corresponding move. Also RP Kameron Loe refused his minor league assignment and has become a free agent.

Fantasy Tip: Fujikawa won't immediately move back into the closer's role. Dale Sveum announced recently that Kevin Gregg is basically the closer right now thanks to his success closing out games. Fujikawa should be expected to setup alongside Carlos Marmol for the time being, but he could snare some save opps from Gregg if he stumbles. Fujikawa is worth owning in deep mixed leagues.

Cubs | Kyuji Fujikawa to pitch again

Tue, 07 May 2013 12:52:38 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Kyuji Fujikawa (forearm) will make his second rehab outing with Double-A Tennessee and throw one inning Tuesday, May 7. He struck out two and walked one in an inning with Triple-A Iowa Sunday, May 5. Fujikawa should be ready to be activated from the disabled list after his outing Tuesday.

Fantasy Tip: Fujikawa should be owned in all leagues still, despite his trip to the DL. The Cubs bullpen has struggled all season and is still in closer-by-committe status involving Kevin Gregg and Carlos Marmol. Fujikawa is likely to enter that mix eventually, and he could regain the sole closer duties if he pitches well upon his return.

Cubs | GM defends Carlos Marmol

Tue, 07 May 2013 07:46:42 -0700

Chicago Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer was asked why RP Carlos Marmol continues to receive chances to pitch in high-leverage situations. "I think he has a number of more appearances than any other pitcher in baseball over the last four or five years," Hoyer said. "This team has expected a lot out of him for a number of years and ridden him really hard over the last few years. Some of that has probably taken its toll. His fastball and slider aren't what they used to be, but in part, that's because he's been really durable and ridden hard by a number of managers here."

Cubs | Sticking with closer-by-committee

Tue, 30 Apr 2013 15:36:50 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum said the team will likely stick with a closer-by-committee approach when RP Kyuji Fujikawa (forearm) returns from the disabled list. Fujikawa could have a rehab outing with Triple-A Iowa Sunday, May 5. RP Kevin Gregg picked up his fourth save of the year Monday, April 29. "I got (a closer)," Sveum said. "I just don't know who it's going to be every night."

Fantasy Tip: This is probably a situation to avoid for fantasy baseball if you can help it. Right now, Gregg, Carlos Marmol and Fujikawa shoulad all be owned in deep mixed formats if you're speculating for saves. Marmol could easily win back the job if he gains enough trust from Sveum, but there's no telling how long that might take.

Cubs | Carlos Marmol's issues mental?

Cubs | Kevin Gregg earns save

Wed, 24 Apr 2013 11:11:16 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Kevin Gregg nailed down the save against the Cincinnati Reds in the 10th inning Tuesday, April 23, after RP Carlos Marmol blew the save in the ninth inning. Gregg is now an option to close out games, as manager Dale Sveum said he will continue to go with the matchups to determine who will pitch in the ninth. "I didn't say (Marmol) would not be the closer," Sveum said. "I said it would come down to matchups."

Fantasy Tip: Run to the waiver wire to pick up Gregg if you're desperate for saves. However, he doesn't receive a ringing endorsement; his save Tuesday was his first since 2011, and it came only because Marmol blew a chance and the offense responded by putting up two runs in the top of the 10th inning.

Marmol had looked good in non-save situations since being bumped from the closer role, but he immediately went back to his old ways Tuesday. Continue to consider him a shaky closer that will hurt you in other categories at the expense of saves.

Cubs | Carlos Marmol blows another save

Wed, 24 Apr 2013 06:43:36 -0700

Chicago Cubs RP Carlos Marmol blew his first save chance Tuesday, April 23, since he was demoted earlier in the season. He didn't allow an earned run, but he walked two and allowed a hit, which allowed an inherited runner to score.

Fantasy Tip: Really? One has to wonder if the team will put him in another save situation again. Marmol had thrown seven straight scoreless frames, and still, technically, hasn't allowed an earned run since April 6. The Cubbies really have no legitimate option to close down games. They don't have a lot at Triple-A Iowa, either. Journeyman 29-year-old Yoanner Negrin has pitched well for Iowa. He has a 2.19 ERA and 15 strikeouts to three walks in 12 1/3 innings. Could they give him a shot? Maybe. Keep him on your radar.

Cubs | Carlos Marmol could have second chance

Tue, 16 Apr 2013 11:10:37 -0700

Chicago Cubs manager Dale Sveum seems to be open to giving RP Carlos Marmol another shot to claim the closer's role in Chicago. "I would be lying to you if he wasn't working his way back into it," Sveum told Fred Mitchell of the Chicago Tribune. "He is throwing strikes and he is throwing his slider more and he's more consistent. So, yeah, he's working his way back. That was part of the deal." NBC Sports' Aaron Gleeman believes Marmol's chances are better now that RP Kyuji Fujikawa (forearm) is on the disabled list and because of the fact that RP Shawn Camp blew his first save chance over the weekend. Marmol has thrown four scoreless innings since his demotion with three strikeouts and two walks.

Fantasy Tip: It probably does help Marmol's chances that Fujikawa is on the shelf, and Sveum seems to have hope for Marmol. If you're desperate, this would be the time to scoop him up and hold him in case he does regain the role. However, it likely won't be a smooth ride, and Marmol's leash will be short, especially when Fujikawa returns from his DL stint. Enter at your own risk.
