Indians | Carlos Santana won't be full-time DH

Fri, 08 Jan 2016 16:04:01 -0800

Cleveland Indians 1B Carlos Santana will not be the club's full-time designated hitter this year with 1B Mike Napoli in the fold, according to manager Terry Francona. Santana has voiced his distaste for the DH role in the past, but Napoli is a superior first baseman and is ahead of Santana on the depth chart at the position. Francona said Santana will still see innings at first base, and he could see limited time at third base, too. The Indians could try him in left field, but Santana has only logged four career innings there in 2012.

Fantasy Tip: Santana has hit .231 two seasons in a row, and in 2015 his homer output dropped from 27 to 19. He shouldn't lose first base eligibility for 2017, but there's not a ton to like outside of that. Don't bank on him adding third base or outfield eligibility. A rebound of his average could be in store, which could make him a sleeper as a late-round corner infielder in deep mixed leagues.

Indians | Mike Napoli to play first base

Tue, 05 Jan 2016 12:24:15 -0800

Cleveland Indians 1B Mike Napoli has been told by Indians management that he will see most of his time at first base.

Fantasy Tip: Napoli should see less wear and tear on his body playing at first, which may increase his power numbers. Playing in the confines of Progressive Field will also help. For now, Napoli is an alluring target for the middle rounds of AL and mixed leagues.

Indians | Mike Napoli signs with Tribe

Wed, 16 Dec 2015 10:36:07 -0800

Free-agent 1B Mike Napoli (Rangers) signed a one-year deal with the Cleveland Indians Wednesday, Dec. 16, pending a physical, according to a sources. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Napoli is expected to be the everyday first baseman.

Fantasy Tip: Napoli faded quickly with Boston last year before being traded to the Texas Rangers. Overall he hit just .224 (91-for-407) with 18 home runs and 50 RBI in 133 games. He obviously has more fantasy appeal in an everyday role, but his swing-and-miss ways will kill your team average. Napoli is a midround target solely for his power.

Rangers | Texas may not have room for Mike Napoli

Thu, 03 Dec 2015 12:57:49 -0800

Free-agent 1B Mike Napoli (Rangers) is highly regarded by the Texas Rangers, but the organization is not sure they have a spot for him.

Fantasy Tip: Napoli hasn't hit the 20-homer benchmark since 2013, and he owns a .236/.348/.415 slash line over the past two seasons. All said, entering his age-34 season, there isn't a lot of like about Napoli in the virtual game outside of taking a late-round flier on him as a potential source of power.

Orioles | Baltimore may make run at Mike Napoli

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 11:43:37 -0800

The Baltimore Orioles could make a run at signing free-agent 1B Mike Napoli (Rangers) if they do not re-sign 1B Chris Davis. General manager Dan Duquette has been a fan of Napoli.

Fantasy Tip: Napoli has plenty of power to spare but rarely makes contact, strikes out a ton and will seriously hurt your fantasy team's batting average. That said, a move to hitter-friendly Camden Yards would appease the fantasy gods, but he'd still strictly be a corner infield option in deep mixed leagues.

Rangers | Mike Napoli could play LF

Wed, 11 Nov 2015 10:05:41 -0800

Free-agent 1B Mike Napoli (Rangers) could receive a look in left field if he re-signs with the Texas Rangers, according to general manager Jon Daniels.

Fantasy Tip: Nap hit 18 homers with 50 RBIs in 407 at-bats last season and would remain an option in the later rounds if he re-ups with Texas.

MLB | Mike Napoli could return to catching

Sun, 08 Nov 2015 11:17:22 -0800

Free-agent 1B Mike Napoli (Rangers) could resume catching next year for the first time since the 2012 season. He had stopped playing the position completely because of a degenerative hip condition and has served exclusively as a first baseman, designated hitter and left fielder since then.

Fantasy Tip: Napoli was never a great defensive catcher, so fantasy owners shouldn't assume that it will ever become his primary position again. He hit .224 with 18 home runs and 50 RBIs in 133 regular-season games between Boston and Texas, although he hit .295 in 78 at-bats after being acquired by the Rangers while mainly facing left-handed pitching.

Rangers | TEX wants to keep Mike Napoli

Fri, 16 Oct 2015 18:09:48 -0700

The Texas Rangers are hoping to re-sign 1B Mike Napoli because the club has a need for right-handed hitting, according to general manager Jon Daniels.

Fantasy Tip: Napoli hit .295 with five home runs and 10 RBIs in 78 at-bats for the Rangers following a dismal start to the 2015 season with the Red Sox. Assuming that he is brought back, Napoli figures to see time at first base, designated hitter and possibly even left field whenever Texas is facing a left-handed starter.

Rangers | Mitch Moreland not playing

Thu, 08 Oct 2015 09:11:07 -0700

Texas Rangers 1B Mitch Moreland is not in the lineup against Toronto Blue Jays left-handed SP David Price for Game 1 of the division series Thursday, Oct. 8. 1B Mike Napoli is starting at first base and is batting fifth.

Fantasy Tip: Napoli ($4,500, 9.0% of cap) did have 18 home runs on the season, and he does have two career home runs in 38 at-bats against Price. However, he also hit just .224 (91-for-407) on the year and struck out 118 times. Twelve of Napoli's 18 dingers this year were against lefties, but Price isn't your run-of-the-mill southpaw. Napoli is a gamble on FantasyScore today.
