Braves | Several Braves could be dealt

Fri, 22 Jul 2016 14:38:03 -0700

Atlanta Braves OF Jeff Francoeur, 2B Gordon Beckham and RP Jim Johnson, who are all pending free agents, are the prime focus of Atlanta's trade talks as the deadline nears. OFs Ender Inciarte and Nick Markakis are also involved, but there's less of a chance they'll be traded.

Fantasy Tip: Francoeur, Beckham and Johnson aren't likely to be anything more than depth for any team that acquires them in a trade this summer. Francoeur can be useful in NL-only and daily leagues in the right lefty matchups. Beckham contributes modestly across all categories for NL-only middle infield depth. Right now, Johnson is a candidate for saves in Atlanta with Arodys Vizcaino shelved, but he's already shown he's a shaky option there.

Braves | Jim Johnson blows save in Cincinnati

Tue, 19 Jul 2016 21:46:14 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jim Johnson blew his third save of the season Tuesday, July 19, against the Cincinnati Reds. He wasn't able to make it out of the ninth inning, recording only two outs while surrendering two runs on four hits.

Fantasy Tip: This was Johnson's first save opportunity since closer Arodys Vizcaino landed on the disabled list, and it didn't exactly pan out he wanted. While the Braves ended up winning the game anyway, this could end up being costly for Johnson, who now owns a 4.59 ERA on the year. If this continues, Hunter Cervenka or Mauricio Cabrera could eventually challenge for save opportunities while Vizcaino is sidelined.

Braves | Jim Johnson takes the loss

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 19:32:32 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jim Johnson took the loss against the Colorado Rockies Saturday, July 16, allowing one run on two hits in the ninth inning.

Fantasy Tip: The fact that Johnson was used in the top of the ninth in a tie game is a good indication that he will be used as the primary closer while Arodys Vizcaino is sidelined. Grab Johnson if you need saves.

Braves | Jim Johnson to close for Atlanta

Sat, 16 Jul 2016 08:34:08 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jim Johnson will have the first chance at saves with RP Arodys Vizcaino (oblique) on the 15-day disabled list, according to interim manager Brian Snitker. Snitker could also use RP Mauricio Cabrera in the ninth inning. Johnson had 101 saves for the Baltimore Orioles in 2012 and 2013. Snitker said the Braves see Vizcaino as a long-term solution in the back end of the bullpen.

Fantasy Tip: Vizcaino was struggling mightily before his injury in the closing role, so this might be the best thing for his fantasy owners. Keep him stashed everywhere since he'll likely return to the role when ready. Johnson has the most experience and should be your first choice off the waiver wire, but Cabrera could snake a few opportunities and has the more electric stuff for the role.

Braves | Elbow issue for Arodys Vizcaino

Sun, 10 Jul 2016 16:30:05 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Arodys Vizcaino (elbow) was not available Sunday, July 10, because of skin irritation on his right elbow. RP Jim Johnson earned the save against the Chicago White Sox, and interim manager Brian Snitker said he expects Vizcaino to be ready following the All-Star break.

Fantasy Tip: If you are desperate for saves, Johnson could be worth a speculative add just in case Vizcaino's elbow issue lingers longer than expected.

Braves | Jim Johnson picks up save

Sat, 18 Jun 2016 20:39:57 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jim Johnson picked up his first save of the season in a 4-3 win over New York Mets Saturday, June 18.

Fantasy Tip: Aroyds Vizcaino didn't pitch in the game, and he was likely being given the night off after pitching in three straight games. Johnson doesn't need to be owned in fantasy leagues.

Braves | Jim Johnson activated from DL

Fri, 03 Jun 2016 22:58:56 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jim Johnson (groin) was activated from the disabled list on Friday, June 3. He pitched a scoreless inning of relief, striking out two, in his return. RP Ryan Weber was demoted to Class AAA Gwinnett in a corresponding move.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson, the one-time Orioles closer, racked up 25 holds last year, 20 of them with the Braves, so he could have a little value in those setups. In more traditional scoring systems he's of no interest.

Braves | Jim Johnson set to come off DL

Tue, 31 May 2016 22:48:51 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jim Johnson (groin) is expected to be activated from the 15-day disabled list on Friday, June 3. Johnson hasn't pitched since May 8.

Fantasy Tip: Johnson got touched up in four straight outings prior to hitting the DL, which pushed his ERA from respectable (3.38) to repugnant (7.90). He does have five holds this year, however, and plenty of back-end experience from his days in Baltimore. Johnson is only a possible target in leagues that count holds.

Braves | Jason Grilli looks to be ready

Mon, 21 Mar 2016 11:12:49 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jason Grilli (Achilles') pitched a scoreless inning Sunday, March 20, and he is showing that he should be ready for opening day after throwing in two spring games after a March 11 simulated game. His fastball was at 94 mph Sunday, so his arm strength is almost back to normal. Grilli is expected to make at least five more appearances before the regular season. The Braves will choose between Grilli and RP Arodys Vizcaino for the closer role. Vizcaino has looked good this spring, giving up three hits and striking out 11 in six spring innings. RP Jim Johnson projects to be the setup man.

Fantasy Tip: The Braves could go with a closer-by-committee to start the year between Grilli and Vizcaino, which will limit both of their fantasy upside. Grilli is a veteran and has the experience, but Vizcaino has the upside after proving worthy of the job in 2015. Both relievers are endgame selections as your third fantasy closer.

Braves | Closer-by-committee in Atlanta?

Tue, 15 Mar 2016 11:01:47 -0700

Atlanta Braves RP Jason Grilli (Achilles') will make his spring debut Thursday, March 17, and the Braves think he has enough time to be ready for opening day April 4. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he could use Grilli in a combination with RPs Jim Johnson and Arodys Vizcaino when Grilli is ready. Johnson and Vizcaino would likely split closing duties if Grilli isn't ready.

"It will be probably the same situation (as last year)," said Gonzalez, who never used Grilli in three consecutive games and sometimes rested him after one game if it was a high pitch-count inning. "I can use all three. Mix and match. Absolutely."

Fantasy Tip: Grill is the front-runner for the majority of saves in Atlanta, but it depends on his health. He's high-risk, high-reward at age 39 for saves speculators. Vizcaino showed he had the stuff to get the job done in place of Grilli last year, and Johnson has the experience factor.
