Pirates | Chris Stewart rehab update

Wed, 27 Jul 2016 19:01:40 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Chris Stewart (knee) ran the bases Wednesday, July 27, and could ramp up baseball activities over the weekend, according to head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk.

Fantasy Tip: It is uncertain when Stewart will be able to begin a rehab assignment but it appears as though a decision could be made early next week. When healthy, he doesn't carry much fantasy relevance unless you need a second catcher for NL-only leagues.

Pirates | Chris Stewart may need surgery

Wed, 06 Jul 2016 18:23:56 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Chris Stewart (knee) may need surgery on his left knee. "If he can't play through it, surgery is an option," said Pirates head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk. "There are a number of issues going on there. We're trying to avoid that at all costs and postpone it to the end of the season."

Fantasy Tip: Pittsburgh is really being tested with their catching depth, as Francisco Cervelli is also still out with injury. Fortunately, Cervelli is due back right after the All-Star break, so the absence of Stewart may ensure he gets even more than the usual number of starts in the second half. If Stewart ends up getting surgery on his knee, he'd miss the remainder of the campaign.

Pirates | Chris Stewart to DL

Mon, 04 Jul 2016 08:28:33 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Chris Stewart (knee) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday, July 4, with left knee discomfort. C Eric Fryer was added to the active roster.

Fantasy Tip: The Bucs are in dire straits at the backstop, and Erik Kratz and Fryer should platoon. Neither are fantasy relevant unless you're needing a second catcher in NL-only leagues.

Pittsburgh Pirates C Chris Stewart is not in the starting lineup against Oakland Athletics SP Daniel Mengden Sunday, July 3. C Erik Kratz will start at catcher and is batting ninth.

Fantasy Tip: Kratz is hitting only .085 with one home run this season and should be avoided in all fantasy leagues.

Pirates | Chris Stewart makes appearance

Tue, 21 Jun 2016 20:57:38 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Chris Stewart (knee) did not start Tuesday, June 21, against the San Francisco Giants, but he came on as a pinch hitter and finished up at first base. He went 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Fantasy Tip: Stewart was making his first appearance in four days after dealing with a sore knee. If he can return to the lineup in the next day or two it will be safe to use him in the active fantasy lineup if you normally rely upon him for some reason.

Pirates | Francisco Cervelli makes early exit

Fri, 10 Jun 2016 17:59:30 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates C Francisco Cervelli (hand) left the game against the St. Louis Cardinals Friday, June 10, after experiencing pain in his left hand. He swung at the first pitch of his fourth-inning at-bat against SP Michael Wacha before being removed in favor of pinch hitter Chris Stewart, who remained in the game as the catcher.

Fantasy Tip: Cervelli's injury is not believed to be serious but Stewart would serve as Pittsburgh's primary catcher if he is forced to miss an extended period of time. Keep checking back for further updates on his status.

Pirates | Jung Ho Kang, Francisco Cervelli out

Thu, 09 Jun 2016 13:24:17 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates 3B Jung Ho Kang and C Francisco Cervelli are not in the starting lineup Thursday, June 9. 3B David Freese is starting at third base and is hitting fifth, while C Chris Stewart is catching and batting eighth against Colorado Rockies SP Chad Bettis.

Fantasy Tip: Freese is having a fine season in Pittsburgh with a .292 average and four home runs and 19 RBI in 171 at-bats. The power isn't really there, but he's been filling out the stat sheet and is a fine value play in DFS while hitting in Coors Field. Stewart is a low-end catching play but could be worth a deep sleeper selection in a hitter-friendly park.

Pirates | Pittsburgh sitting four players

Tue, 07 Jun 2016 16:17:31 -0700

Pittsburgh Pirates OF Starling Marte (ankle), 3B Jung Ho Kang, 2B Josh Harrison and C Francisco Cervelli are not in the starting lineup for the second game of a doubleheader against the New York Mets Tuesday, June 7. OF Gregory Polanco will start in left field, while OF Matt Joyce will start in right field and is batting fourth against Mets SP Jacob deGrom. 1B Sean Rodriguez will start at third base and is batting sixth. 2B Cole Figueroa will start at second base and is batting seventh, while C Chris Stewart will start at catcher and is batting eighth.

Fantasy Tip: Joyce is probably the only player that has value among the new players in the lineup. Joyce is hitting .319 on the season and should be an attractive option in daily fantasy leagues.
