The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed C Russell Martin (hamstring) on the 15-day disabled list because of a hamstring strain. The team also recalled C Tony Sanchez from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Fantasy Tip: With Martin out of the lineup, Sanchez and Chris Stewart will handle the catching duties. Both probably would only be options in NL-only or two-catcher leagues.

Pittsburgh Pirates C Chris Stewart (knee) caught seven innings for Triple-A Indianapolis Saturday, April 12, and all of a four-hours plus game Sunday, April 13. Manager Clint Hurdle said Stewart felt good Monday, April 14, and he could return soon. "We're finalizing the last bit of Chris' return-to-play program," Hurdle said, "and just have to run it by (general manager Neal Huntington)."

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed SP Jeff Locke (side) and C Chris Stewart (knee) on the 15-day disabled list. Locke has a side strain and Stewart is recovering from knee surgery. Both moves are retroactive to March 21.

Pittsburgh Pirates C Tony Sanchez did not do enough to convince management he is ready to be the primary backup to C Russell Martin, so the club added C Chris Stewart this offseason. That likely signals that Sanchez will begin with Triple-A Indianapolis for the third consecutive year with a potential September call-up.
