Philadelphia Phillies president and CEO David Montgomery is taking a leave of absence from the team as he undergoes cancer treatments. Former general manager Pat Gillick, who has served as a senior advisor to the club, will step in on a temporary basis.

Buster Olney, of ESPN The Magazine, reports Pat Gillick, the former general manager of the Toronto Blue Jays, said he is not interested in returning to the team. However, he will not rule out the possibility of overseeing baseball operations for another team sometime in the future.

Todd Zolecki, of The Philadelphia Inquirer, reports several team insiders have said Philadelphia Phillies assistant general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is expected to get the GM job, replacing Pat Gillick, whose contract expires on Oct. 31. An announcement from Phillies president David Montgomery could come within 24 to 48 hours after the conclusion of the World Series or after Gillick's contract expires.

Robert MacLeod, of The Globe and Mail, reports the Toronto Blue Jays may be interested in luring Philadelphia Phillies general manager Pat Gillick back to the team to serve as its team president. Gillick was the general manager from 1978 to 1994, including the teams in 1992 and 1993 that won the World Series. "I really can't comment because I'm basically working here with the Phillies and we're trying to get this thing done," he said. "I don't even want to think about anything else; I'm trying to get through this series and the next series and the end of the season."
