"We don't have any commitments to 2013 and beyond," Padres General Manager Josh Byrnes said. "But we do have choices and decisions to make. Our payroll model is setting up well. We're not in total go-for-it mode, but we can make some choices. We acquired Carlos with the thought that we could extend him. We want to win as soon as possible for as long as possible."

A deal is apparently close to being finalized Friday, Oct. 21, but if it lingers, Selig may step in to help mediate the impasse. San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer will be joining Epstein in Chicago as the general manager. Epstein originally asked new Padres GM Josh Byrnes to come over to Chicago, but Byrnes declined the opportunity. Padres assistant general manager Jason McLeod will also be heading to Chicago when the deal is done.
