Tue, 03 Jan 2012 00:41:28 -0800

The San Diego Padres may utilize contract extensions on players like OF Carlos Quentin and OF Cameron Maybin to lock up some free-agent years and guarantee payroll certainty. "We don't have any commitments to 2013 and beyond," Padres General Manager Josh Byrnes said. "But we do have choices and decisions to make. Our payroll model is setting up well. We're not in total go-for-it mode, but we can make some choices. We acquired Carlos with the thought that we could extend him. We want to win as soon as possible for as long as possible."
