Padres general manager Josh Byrnes insists the team is trying to build around Headley, who is under team control for another two years. "We've had very broad talks," Byrnes said. "It's worth a discussion, but we have two more years with him. That's a lot of time."

Hoyer will be the general manager under president of baseball operations Theo Epstein, while McLeod will be the head of scouting and player development. Major League Baseball commissioner Bud Selig hinted that he may step into the compensation negotiations between the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox involving general manager Theo Epstein. A deal is apparently close to being finalized Friday, Oct. 21, but if it lingers, Selig may step in to help mediate the impasse.
San Diego Padres general manager Jed Hoyer will be joining Epstein in Chicago as the general manager. Epstein originally asked new Padres GM Josh Byrnes to come over to Chicago, but Byrnes declined the opportunity. Padres assistant general manager Jason McLeod will also be heading to Chicago when the deal is done.
