Five possible replacements have been mentioned for fired San Diego Padres general manager Josh Byrnes. Candidates include former general manager and current Arizona Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers, Larry Beinfest (ex-Marlins GM), Farhan Zaidi (Athletics assistant GM/director of baseball operations), David Forst (A's assistant general manager) and Jason McLeod (a former Padre executive and currently the Chicago Cubs' senior vice president of player development and amateur scouting).

San Diego Padres 3B Chase Headley is not on the trading block, according to team sources. Padres general manager Josh Byrnes insists the team is trying to build around Headley, who is under team control for another two years. "We've had very broad talks," Byrnes said. "It's worth a discussion, but we have two more years with him. That's a lot of time."

"We don't have any commitments to 2013 and beyond," Padres General Manager Josh Byrnes said. "But we do have choices and decisions to make. Our payroll model is setting up well.
