Tue, 23 Oct 2007 20:05:58 -0700 Updating previous items, the Associated Press' Gregg Bell reports Seattle Mariners pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre is working on a one-year deal. The 65-year-old Stottlemyre (cancer) was cleared by his doctor this past summer to return to work on a full-time basis, but he is hoping this is just the first of a series of one-year deals with the club. "I certainly hope it lasts for more than one year," said Stottlemyre. "Whatever happens, at my age and certainly with my health issue, I'm excited for the opportunity." He was also the No. 1 choice for the job, according to Mariners manager John McLaren. The Mariners' starters ranked just 12th in the American League this past season with a 5.12 ERA.

He said, "Mel Stottlemyre will always be a Yankee." This comes a day after Stottlemyre was critical of Steinbrenner's lack of appreciation.

Steinbrenner said Tuesday: "I congratulate the Angels and their manager on the great job they've done." "I laughed when I saw it," Stottlemyre said. "My first thoughts were, 'What about Joe? Joe had done a hell of a job, too.' To congratulate the other manager and not congratulate your own after what he'd done this year, I laughed." Stottlemyre also criticized the schism between the team's New York and Tampa, Fla., offices and said Torre's job status shouldn't be questioned.
