Darren Balsley Fantasy Baseball News, Notes, Rumors and Statistics
The latest Darren Balsley MLB and fantasy baseball news
Tue, 02 Apr 2013 16:59:29 -0700 San Diego Padres SP Tyson Ross won the No. 5 starter battle because he had a sound spring and the Padres want to ease Andrew Cashner into action via the bullpen. Early in camp, Ross worked with pitching coach Darren Balsley to change his stride during his delivery to help his pitches stay lower in the strike zone. At one point, Ross had a run of 15 1/3 scoreless innings in spring ball. The Padres probably will cap Cashner's innings this year at somewhere between 150 and 160. Fantasy Tip: Ross has long boasted potential for more strikeouts and better consistency, so this looks like a sound opportunity for him to step into deep-league relevance, even if only for a short stretch. Expect Cashner, whose thumb looks to have healed, to be the first man up if a rotation spot clears. In deep mixed leagues, he's still worth monitoring or stashing; he should still provide plenty of K's as a reliever.

Pitching coach Darren Balsley, hitting coach Randy Ready and bullpen coach Darrel Akerfelds are all expected to return.
