St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Derek Lilliquist told reporters he will not stray too far from the routine Dave Duncan used as coach. "The recipe for his chocolate cake is pretty good," Lilliquist said. "Maybe there are some sprinkles here and there. But the recipe has been good."

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak indicated that pitching coach Dave Duncan won't serve as the team's pitching coach at all this year as he takes a leave of absence to attend to his sick wife. The team is unsure if Duncan will return next year.

The St. Louis Cardinals announced Friday, Jan. 6, that Derek Lilliquist will replace Dave Duncan as the pitching coach this year. Dyer Miller will be the team's bullpen coach.

Cardinals | Dave Duncan taking leave of absence

St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan is taking a leave of absence to be with his wife who is battling cancer. The team is leaving open the possibility of Duncan returning to the organization at a later date. Bullpen coach Derek Lilliquist took over when Duncan took a leave of absence last season but it is not known if he will take over this time.

Assistant hitting coach Mike Aldrete will become the bench coach and minor league manager Chris Maloney will become the first base coach.

Updating previous reports, St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Dave Duncan is expected to remain with the team through the rest of the postseason, but his future beyond this year is still up in the air. "There's too much uncertainty right now to know for sure what the situation is going to be," he said. Duncan was away from the team for five weeks earlier this season to be with his wife as she underwent treatment for a brain tumor.
