Texas Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux is interested in the Chicago Cubs' vacant managerial position. Maddux is more interested now than he was in the same position two years ago. Maddux has not been contacted by the Cubs. New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi is the leading candidate if he doesn't return to the Yankees. The Cubs would like to add someone with previous managerial experience in the big leagues.

Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington watched intently Thursday, Feb. 23, and Friday, Feb. 24, as his pitchers took fielding practice. He stressed defense when he met with pitchers and catcher prior to Thursday's first workout. "We put ourselves in predicaments that we shouldn't have been in. If you throw it away, you throw it away," pitching coach Mike Maddux said. "But if you throw it away because your footwork is not sufficient, then we have an issue. That's the big thing - fundamentals."
