Yankees | Pitching coach has plan for A.J. Burnett

New York Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild believes SP A.J. Burnett can be turned around for the 2011 season, according to Anthony McCarron of The New York Daily News. "He's a guy who's had success, he's a guy with good stuff," Rothschild said. "His arm is healthy and his head's in a good spot."

Updating a previous item, the New York Yankees signed pitching coach Larry Rothschild to a three-year deal Friday, Nov. 19, according to the New York Daily News' Christian Red. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Cubs | Mike Quade wants staff to return

Chicago Cubs manager Mike Quade said he is hoping that the team's entire coaching staff returns for next year and left open the possibility that minor league manager Ryne Sandberg could remain with the team, according to ESPNChicago.com. Pitching coach Larry Rothschild, hitting coach Rudy Jaramillo and bullpen coach Lester Strode are definitely returning.

The Chicago Sun-Times' Gordon Wittenmyer reports Chicago Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild said the Cubs are monitoring SP Carlos Zambrano's innings, not his right shoulder. The team will ease him into a workload of spring games that won't start until the second time through the rotation.

The Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan reports Chicago Cubs RP Kerry Wood (shoulder) threw his second batting practice session on Feb. 27 and the Cubs hope to get him into a game during the first week of March. "We'll see," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said. "With him, we'll just take it day-by-day. We're not holding him back."

The Associated Press reports a lengthy investigation by Chicago Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild determined it wasn't anything he did or didn't do that led to the staff's many injuries, particularly those to SP Kerry Wood and SP Mark Prior in a year when rookie pitchers made 80 starts for the Cubs. "You know you're doing things right, so you keep doing them. In 2003, everybody with the Cubs was a genius. We kept doing things the way we always did, and two years later we were idiots. In truth, you're neither one," Rothschild said. "In all my years, as long as I have been a pitching coach, I've never had anyone hurt like that."
