Orioles | Close to naming new pitching coach

The Baltimore Orioles are likely to name their new pitching coach early next week, with a decision possibly coming as soon as Monday, Oct. 28. The four leading candidates are from outside the organization: former Philadelphia Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee, current Seattle Mariners pitching coach Carl Willis, Texas Rangers bullpen coach Andy Hawkins and Atlanta Braves minor league pitching coordinator Dave Wallace.

Orioles | Several pitching coach candidates

The Atlanta Braves have to give permission to the Baltimore Orioles to interview minor-league pitching coordinator Dave Wallace. The Orioles are expected to interview him starting next week, as well as former Philadelphia Phillies pitching coach Rich Dubee, Seattle Mariners pitching coach Carl Willis and Texas Rangers bullpen coach Andy Hawkins. Dubee's interview is set for Tuesday, Oct. 22. Manager Buck Showalter said Friday, Oct. 18, that the team will also consider bullpen coach Scott McGregor, interim pitching coach Bill Castro and Triple-A pitching coach Mike Griffin.

Jim Street, of Mariners.MLB.com, reports the Seattle Mariners have named Dave Wallace the team's new Minor League pitching coordinator. Wallace will also serve as special assistant to Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi.

The Houston Chronicle's Jose De Jesus Ortiz reports Houston Astros CL Brad Lidge threw a live batting practice session March 18 with Astros manager Phil Garner and pitching coach Dave Wallace monitoring. The session on a back field was surprising to some because pitchers who are not coming back from injuries rarely throw live batting practice at this stage of spring camp.

Astros | Boston pitching coach jumps leagues

The Houston Chronicle's Brian McTaggart reports Boston Red Sox pitching coach Dave Wallace was hired by the Houston Astros as the replacement for Jim Hickey, who was fired after 2 1/2 seasons on the job. Wallace spent the past four seasons as pitching coach for the Red Sox, helping them win the World Series in 2004. "We're real excited," Astros general manager Tim Purpura said at the second day of baseball's GM meetings. "This is a guy we had pretty well targeted from the beginning as somebody who would be a strong consideration for us."
