"We've got all these power arms we've been throwing out there, and we need them to throw inside for strikes," Washington said. "Now that they've been through the wars, it's time to start perfecting it and start using every part of the plate."

He stressed defense when he met with pitchers and catcher prior to Thursday's first workout. "We put ourselves in predicaments that we shouldn't have been in. If you throw it away, you throw it away," pitching coach Mike Maddux said. "But if you throw it away because your footwork is not sufficient, then we have an issue. That's the big thing - fundamentals."

It's possible Young could also start Sunday, June 19. Washington said he expected to move 1B Mitch Moreland to the outfield for the majority of the weekend, which means the OF Endy Chavez-OF Craig Gentry platoon probably would be shelved for a couple of days. Moreland is likely to play right, with OF Nelson Cruz moving to left and OF Josh Hamilton moving from left to center.
