New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees requested that suspended head coach Sean Payton, general manager Mickey Loomis and linebackers coach Joe Vitt be allowed to attend the Week 5 game against the San Diego Chargers, as he attempts to break the NFL record with a touchdown pass in 48 consecutive games. The NFL granted permission for the suspended coaches to attend, according to a source. "Commissioner (Roger) Goodell has granted that permission. Coaches Payton and Vitt and Mickey Loomis will be permitted to watch the game in a private area of the stadium and will have no contact with the team," the NFL said Wednesday, Oct. 3, in a statement.

New Orleans Saints interim head coach Joe Vitt said the team has made progress on the field during voluntary practices. The focus has been on football instead of off-the-field issues. "Listen, I couldn't be more proud of the guys," Vitt said. "We've had a great tempo, we've been in and out of the huddle, we're up and down. We're running hard defensively. We're introducing a new system, but our guys have really responded."

Green Bay Packers DE Anthony Hargrove said in a written declaration to the NFL that he was told by St. Louis Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and New Orleans Saints linebackers coach Joe Vitt to deny the existance of the Saints' bounty program in 2010 when all were members of the Saints and were being investigated by the NFL. Hargrove denied the existence of the program when talking with NFL investigators in 2010 like the coaches told him.

Interim head coach Joe Vitt said Toon has a great pedigree (his father is former NFL star Al Toon), is a polished route runner and can catch the ball outside of his framework while making big plays.

Updating previous reports, St. Louis Rams assistant coach Joe Vitt was treated at a hospital for a lingering hand infection earlier this week, according to the Associated Press. What was originally disclosed as a staph infection turned out to be a "normal skin strep infection," a common ailment that wasn't healing, according to internal medicine physician Dr. Douglas Pogue.

The Rams spent last week negotiating a contract adjustment for interim head coach Joe Vitt which would increase his salary to nearly $1 million for an entire season. It would be prorated to the first game Vitt coached in October of 2005.

He was expected to speak at his regular press conference later in the day, according to team spokesman Duane Lewis. Lewis said Vitt is doing fine and it was just a routine procedure. The Rams have a Bye Week during Week 9.
