Angels | Chris Iannetta working on framing

Wed, 18 Mar 2015 09:50:45 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Chris Iannetta is working hard this spring to work on his pitch-framing skills behind the plate, since he hasn't been good at it in recent seasons. He ranked 87th among 105 catchers in gaining extra strikes for pitchers last year with a score of minus-19. San Francisco Giants C Buster Posey led the league with a score of plus-179.6. "I might have to adjust my glove positioning," Iannetta said. "I try to keep a low target, but maybe my 'relaxation point' was a little too high."

Fantasy Tip: Fantasy owners could care less about what Iannetta does on defense, but it shouldn't be overlooked. If he improves at framing pitches, perhaps skipper Mike Scioscia will be fine with giving Iannetta more starts behind the dish in 2015. Iannetta doesn't crack our list of top-20 fantasy catchers, but he's a fine second option in leagues that start two catchers, and he could provide double-digit home runs.

Angels | Chris Iannetta to see heavy workload

Fri, 20 Feb 2015 09:51:46 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Chris Iannetta will be limited to between 100 and 115 starts behind the plate this season, according to manager Mike Scioscia. Iannetta made 92 starts last year and has a career high of 105 starts. He could also see time at designated hitter against left-handed pitchers.

Fantasy Tip: The fact that Iannetta is slated to see more starts behind the plate after Hank Conger was dealt to the Houston Astros is a good thing for his fantasy value, but it's really the only thing he has going for him. His statistical profile is rather boring otherwise, making him more of a second backstop in two-catcher leagues.

Angels | Chris Iannetta using contacts

Thu, 13 Feb 2014 16:41:43 -0800

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Chris Iannetta used contacts down the stretch last season, and they were a big reason he finished the last two months with a slash line of .263/.366/.453. He only uses the contacts for games, and he thinks it made a big difference. "I started seeing the ball a lot better," Iannetta said. "Even catching, (before contacts) I felt the ball was jumping on me. I was focusing so hard to find a release point and I wasn't reacting the way I know I can, and I didn't really know why."

Blue Jays | Interested in adding catching

Mon, 21 Oct 2013 12:11:29 -0700

The Toronto Blue Jays are interested in trading for Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim Cs Chris Iannetta or Hank Conger, according to a person familiar with the team's plans. C J.P. Arencibia hit just .194 with 21 home runs, 55 RBIs and a .592 OPS in 138 games this year. He's eligible for salary arbitration next year after he made $505,600 in 2013.

Angels | Hank Conger seeing more playing time

Fri, 28 Jun 2013 20:46:48 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Hank Conger has seen more playing time lately, which is a combination of the struggles of C Chris Iannetta and Conger's overall improved play offensively and defensively.

Fantasy Tip: Conger has thrown out more would-be base stealers than Iannetta, and he is seeing more at-bats. He is worth using as a No. 2 catcher in AL-only fantasy leagues.

Angels | Hank Conger seeing more time

Tue, 07 May 2013 16:03:16 -0700

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim C Hank Conger is catching SP C.J. Wilson's fifth straight start, but manager Mike Scioscia said it has more to do with C Chris Iannetta's struggles. Scioscia isn't necessarily trying to pair Conger with Wilson. "First and foremost, we want him to get a little more of a comfort level behind the plate. He's doing a good job, but it just doesn't look like he's as comfortable as he needs to be back there. On the offensive side, he hasn't gotten a lot of hits to fall in, but that's secondary to what our starting pitchers need especially," Scioscia said.
